Just my two cents;
-Some "dance" acts have played outside the tent.
Basement Jaxx, Thievery Corporation, Air and Zero 7 to name a few. One year Groove Armada played in a non-dance tent. So you really don't know until the schedule is released or it says "In the Tent" like it
does this year for Daft Punk and Madonna.
-Some of the DJ sets have gone as long as 2 hours. But are usually 90 minutes.
-Traffic is a nightmare from the main road only. If you go the back way then its pretty easy in and out.
-Camping can really suck if its windy and/or cold at night. Which it has been in recent years. But hotels this year sold out faster than ever. Good luck finding rooms now.
-2 years ago Radiohead ended the Main stage early and everybody moved to the Dance tent to see Kraftwerk. Expect the Dance Tent to be packed this year, but once the headline act goes on expect the crowd to die down some after 15 minutes and non-dance fans grow bored with the music and go home.
-More than anything, expect it to be MEGA-HOT and don't buy, sell or take drugs in the open because there are TONS of undercover agents in the crowd and people getting busted all over.
But all in all Coachella is the best event of the year.

Get there AT LEAST an hour before the gates open, you will get good parking and your exit will be rather fast. It can take over 3 hours to get out of that parking lot (make sure your group stays together as it is VERY easy to loose someone in the dust that is kicked up after the show). As far as camping goes it is impossible to sleep with all of the commotion going on all night long. The showers are a nightmare in the morning, and after an entire day of dancing in 105+ degree heat you will NEED a shower. Make sure you take towels to dab off exessive sweat and I would also suggest baby wipes or something like that to wipe your body off because after about 6 hours you will feel disgusting from all the sweaty people touching you. I am not sure what the policy is this year regarding camelback's or any type of water container but MAKE SURE YOU STAY HYDRATED!!! AVOID ALCOHOL, it is your worst enemy in the heat. You will dry up before the sun even goes down if you drink booze all day. There are many many amazing things to see at Coachella, anything from student films to industrial sculptures, don't stay in the same area all day, wander around and take in the whole EXPERIENCE. Coachella isn't just about the music, it is also about art.
Just a side note: DO NOT BUY DRUGS AT COACHELLA!!! They work a huge undercover narcotics unit at the festival. You have like a 50/50 chance of getting busted. |
