Have we always had adds from Google?
Did I just become new? or did those ads at the top from google just show up out of no where?
can we turn them off in a profile setting or something?

Always have.
I've love to convice Swamper to let me have the opportunity to increase the revenue generated by the top-left banner ads (Google and others) by at least 15-20%.
With the right setup and management, 15-20% increase in revenues over a 2 to 3 month period should not be a (significant) challenge.

they only show if you're not logged in.
i think del is fiddling around with the google ads, so that is why you're seeing them turn on and off.
the way i see it, del, you should put google ads everywhere. you'll make more money and we can reciprocate by not minding them b/c we love using the boards as a part of our everyday lives

right guys?!?!?!
I actually left Tribe.ca simply because of the fact they started whoring out thier add space to google. I couldn't stand having to scroll through them. Personally if I get bombarded too much with them then you will likely see my average posts per day on TA drop significantly. I have not posted once on Tribe since they made the switch and don't really plan on it either. (I had well over 5,000 posts there and just left)
I like you TA bunch and all, but if the interface annoys me then I'm not going to subject myself to that all day every day.

Websites are not charities. They have costs (servers, bandwidth, software, content creation costs, etc) and need to recoup their costs somehow. Advertising allows users to use websites at no (or reduced) cost.
I can understand user reservations about being "bombed" with ads, but TA's single ad spot (top left) is hardly intrusive (regardless of what is in the ad spot [adsense, flash, etc]).
If you are logged in to TA (with your username/pw) you don't see google ads (except possibly in the top left).
