i don't think it's a rumor.
one of the selling points of the m5g is the "upgraded" tonearm cable, and interconnects. the interconnects actually have the words "technics hi-fidelity audio cord" printed on them.
-i have not done a side by side comparison, so i can't tell you how much better it is than the regular techs.
also the m5g has a screw at the base of the tonearm, that you can tighten when you are going to do some serious scratching to help needle keep it's grip on the record.
the +/-16 feature helps me a bit too.
