So i was reading through the Vinyl vs CD's thread...

and i started to worry about the early decision i made to start out on vinyl some years ago. with the release of such new technology like the DJM-800 and its key matching abilities, what other realm is the vinyl still obsolete in, if any? aren't there mixer's and samplers out there that let you record loops off vinyl too?

the 800 is a mixer, what does that have to do with vinyl being obsolete?

and the 800 doesnt key match. one of its functions is it moves the key to the closest "real" key. you cant just put 2 songs together and the mixer matches them for you

yeah, i understand it doesnt key match "for" me. i didn't think i even implied that ??

i guess basically..

what is it that Vinyl CAN'T do these days as compared to cd?

The way your post reads it implies that you think it does the harmonic mixing for you.
If that were true then it wouldn't just be vinyl that it applied to but all mediums played through the mixer.

Key matching is still very much a part of what ever format you use from vinyl to Ableton. If you don't key match on Ableton you will sound just as shit as you would on vinyl, the only difference is some of the tools that Ableton has to adjust the key on your tracks but this isn't exactly the best either so you still need musical sense to be able to mix well.

Yeah, my denon dnx-1500 lets me do loops off of vinyl. It's a bit annoying because it's hard to transition out of (since the vinyl's still playing normally while the mixer is looping whatever you looped), but definitely works.

Not only do I not think vinyl is obsolete in any way...but even if it were, who cares. I started on vinyl...I've added CDJ's to my setup so I can do both. You can get some very expensive CD players that will do a very good job, especially if you're only using them for a few tracks in a set.
