This month we look into some top notch prog stars from the Melbourne circuit, Chris Meehan, DJ Mischeif from Dirty Disco fame, Paulie C & Lister Cooray and newcomer to the movement Richard Henson tearing up the breakbeat downstairs. Director of Vapour Recordings with mentor Kasey Taylor, Chris has been an integral part of Australia’s dance music scene for years now.
After doing his ‘apprenticeship’ around Melbourne for some years Chris began to reach a larger audience when his production work with Kasey Taylor began to make the world take notice.
With productions and remix work for labels such as Eq, Sog Chrome, Electric music people and Feedme records, as well as releases on his own Vapour recordings, Chris has taken his passion for music to the next level.
After a successful European tour in mid 2004 that saw Chris visit Portugal, Sweden, Estonia, UK, and Turkey with overwhelming success, it showed that this boy from Melbourne Australia was ready to show the world what he was capable of.
Playing with all the big names, including Digweed, Sasha, Seamen, Hernan, Satoshi, Warren, Fortier, Dekay and Infusion to name a few, Chris’ drive and love of dance music is taking him places.
After another successful tour through Europe and South America over the 2004/05 New Year period, Chris has cemented his position amongst dance music’s respected and in demand dj’s.
With the success of the ‘Vapourized’ show he hosts with Kasey Taylor on www.protonradio.com and the commencement of ‘VapouRise’ Recordings, the pairs 2nd record label venture, things seem to be going from strength to strength.
Chris’s Dj sets are diverse and consuming and was referred to as ‘The Storm Bringer’ when recently interviewed on a popular Australian Dance music website.
He’s a man to watch.
Paulie C & Lister Cooray [inPROGress]
Paulie & Lister launched InProgress Entertainment in 2005 with their first party presenting Steve May & Dean Millson. Backing up this effort they were invited to warmup the main room at the last Obsession party at Rome 680 where they put together two hours of progressive aural bliss, capturing the ears and attention of those in attendance with smooth mixing and the perfect segues into the rest of the night. While they might be two names you’re not familiar with at the moment, by the end of 2006 this may well be a different story. With another instalment of Inprogress in the pipeline, along with a support set to Kyau vs Albert when the Unify crew brings them to town in late March, Paulie C & Lister Cooray are out to cement their reputations as the year goes on.
DJ Mish’Chief (Marishka Cross)
DJ Mish’Chief (Marishka Cross) is CRAZY about dance music! If she’s not spinning deadly tracks in the DJ booth you’ll probably find her front and centre on the dance floor. Known for her energy, dynamic sets and ability to get a crowd jumping her taste spans a wide range of genres from Progressive, Psy-Trance, Jacking House, Techno, Electro etc….
Her style can best be described as tough, cheeky, driving tunes with rolling bass-lines and a bit of menace. DJ Mish’Chief keeps it fresh - she’s not afraid to mix up the old with the new, or cross genres when she plays. Her passion and taste in music is reflected in her enthusiasm to surprise with combinations of house and techno, vocals with tribal, rap with prog and rock with electronic. Her sets are distinctive, there’s an infectious attitude about her and her sound that’s cheeky and definitely energy and passion. This chick will make you move and have you working up a sweat by the time she’s done! Mish’Chief has played with numerous promoters and various club nights including, Sunny, Private Function, Purr Events, Electro, Liquid and of course Altitude where you can catch her Saturday nights (on rotation).
