Correct. They turned it into SMB2.

Here's a bit of trivia that some people might not know:

It was then ported RIGHT back to Japan as Super Mario Bros. USA!

The Japanese SMB2 was included in the SNES game Super Mario All-Stars titled "Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels."

the more i think about it, the more i wonder- why the hell would they ever make this into mario 2? it's nothing like mario at all. was there multiple characters in doki doki panic too? or is it just that one dude with the turban?
