Sad Schizophrenia

While I was at my parents today having lunch they had broke the sad news to me...my 23 yr old cousin Gary is now in rebab for Schizophrenia. I knew for a while he hasnt been well...but I had no idea it was this until today. My aunt and uncle are so upset....as he would not agree to get help....so the cops had to come to his home and take him away handcuffed. I started to ball infront of my parents..and then we all cried together. I have never felt this scared and depressed in a long time.

I have been reading up on Schizophrenia today. Apparently someone on his dad's side has it. My cousin refuses to talk to his parents now. He had not left the house in 6 mths....and I dont know what to think will come out of all this.

Someone asked me today if he did drugs..as far as I know only weed..and my brother told me today he had also done coke at one point. I dont know if this would be a factor in what has happened to him.

I didnt go visit my new baby cousin today b/c I am such a mess...and I forgot to wish my brother happy birthday.

Sorry for such a depressing thread..but I am kinda hoping if some of you have experienced a friend or family member how as Schizophrenia to share what has happened (if things got better or worse). I would really like to hear some if any of you are comfortable sharing on here or even on msn....my addy is in my profile.

yeah i read that researchers claim that weed can bring about schizophrenia. but i also read somewhere that those who developed schizophrenia from cannabis use are usually treated well and subdue the disease. hope everything will be alright.

I'm very sorry to hear about your cousin, Schizophrenia is a very hard thing to deal with, for a family as well as for the person who is suffering from it.

About the drug relation, I can tell you that his drug past has nothing to do with his condition... this disease is passed on through genetics only.

I don't have any family members that have schizophrenia, but my father suffers from a very serious case of BiPolar Disorder.. so I know what its like having someone with a mental disease around.

All I can say is that its very important that your cousin seeks medical help, however, ppl who have schizophrenia will often deny this help.. because most if the time they don't realize they actually have a disorder...it would be very helpful for him to have ppl he trusts around him for support.. because this disease can often make a person lose track of who they feel comfortable with..

Once again I'm very sorry to hear about this happening to a memeber of your family...
and as for your state after hearing about this i can't express how important it is for you to talk about your emotions and your feelings.
when my dad was diagnosed i was so upset that i just blocked the pain away and it resulted in me not being able to eat, sleep or even see ppl that i care about.. i was a mess and it took a lot to get me out of the hole i was in... and i would never wish what i put myself through for anyone...
i know i don't know you but i understand all the things you feeling.. the anger, the pain and the fear... and so i can say that you have to face this head on with your family.. and you all need to deal with this together

i hope all the best for you, your cousin and your family..

Nikki

I wasn't saying that drugs can't make it worse... i said that its passed on through genetics.. not caused by drugs..

ppl with the disease often will be more suseptable to addiction and all that...and most of the time schizophrenia symptoms start to appear during the early 20s.. then they may go away and start up again way later in life ( sometimes not until early 40s)

i wasn't saying drugs don't affect it.. i was saying that its never been proven that drugs cause it

Hey, i know how you feel. A close family friend's son was diagnosed with schizophrenia recently. I used to play with him all the time as a kid and i NEVER suspected it! I knew he was more quiet than other kids but that never really phased me because i talked enought for the two of us. Besides, lots of people are quiet or look like they're in their own little world without being shizophrenic.

I don't really know what I can tell you to make you feel better, it's a sad condition, however medication will make him better. He will probably not be able to have any stable romantic relationship but believe me when i say he will be able to do practically anything a "normal" person can do.

I can understand your cousin's refusal to get treated, my friend went through the same thing. The thing about schizophrenic's is they abhorr change. So any change in their routine or life is very unwelcome, which is why he is upset now. He will get over it though i'm sure! My friend got over it as well and is now in great shape! He's still quiet but does not have episodes like he used to

Either ways i wish you luck, and make sure that if you do see him you don't treat him any differently than a regular person. My friend gets very depressed when that happens, as schizophrenics do know they have the condition and can suffer a huge self-esteem problem afterwards if people treat them like they're different.

I really do hope things work out for your cousin and yourself! Be brave

This is an incorrect statement.. teh truth is schitzophrenia can come from abuse of drugs and anything that affects your dopamine levels and causes a chemical imbalance. People who do alot of cocaine can develope schitzophrenia due to the chemical imbalances it causes within the brain.

so sorry to hear that hun..
I got an ex who'se father suffers from the disease..ofcourse does not admit to to himself or anyone, mostly cuz he got noone in his life by the way he treats people..extreme levels of paranoia, biterness..just painful to see..

yes drugs may help to bring out a disease already engraved in one's genetics..I got another friend who for 11 years did weed non stop..still does
and I mean has extremely large quantities of it in his house and smokes it non stop daily.
The guy has definitaly developed the disease. I think a member from his family has it too.

I have no idea how well developed the meds for this are, but Im sure there are things to somewhat control it

I hope your cuz will be ok..Hopefully something gets through to him even for a bit for him to listen and understand.
Be strong for yourself and for him
