REVIEW: Bal En Blanc

Well first off, I met/chilled with too many TAs to remember so I'm only gonna list a couple, if I forgot you, sorry.

Taha, Jenn, Erika, Nick, Juan, Marc, Dan, Malek, Val, Jesse, Rob, the_devil (Diana?), Jay, cyberflow, Neo Hacker and the list goes on and on...

I left early, so I may have missed some great stuff but my review is as follows:

Got there at around 11:15ish and met Taha in the Guest-list line, had to wait a while cause the girls checking off the names were blabbing with eachother a lot. Proceeded to the VIP line-up after recieving my ticket/bracelet and encountered JENN, then we went through searches/coat checks etc and were finally inside. Taha and I were eager to get to the VIP and checkout Nic Fanciulli, who had already been playing for a while... DAMN IS HE SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK. Nic Fanciulli was on FIRE, I loved every track he played (recognised lots, didnt recognise plenty). Thank you Malek for all the pics you took, and thank your team also cause they took some pictures of us also, (wow im gonna look like such an idiot in the pics). So basically Taha and I were chilling next to the booth when Fanciulli walks up to sign some guy's paper, Taha told Nic to check out my shirt which said "Nic Fanciulli kicks the Easter Bunny's Ass". Nic started laughing and said some random british stuff and then told me he needed a picture with me, so I suggested asking one of the EDMM guys but he insisted he have it taken with his own camera, he kinda then realized he was still Dj'ing and told me to wait there, he then wandered back to the decks and continued his set (Which was fackin siiiiiiiiiiiiick). I proceeded to the dancefloor while waiting for Fanciulli, he dropped some madness while I was dancing and I was having a BLAST, great to party with the largest number of TAs I've ever seen. So ya then I went back to the VIP, next to the booth, and Fanciulli eventually wandered over to me again and had his manager take a picture of me and him, then he thanked ME (wtfwtf) and played his last few tracks, when his set was over Taha and I went over to him on his way out and talked briefly, said our goodbyes and to be entirely honest, that's where my night started to get boring.

Malek took a few more pictures of us, I chilled a bit more with people yada yada. To be honest, I didnt do any hardcore partying or anything, just had fun chilling with people, seriously it was fun seeing all of you.

And oh yeah, the House room was awful in my opinion, everytime I set foot in there I got pissed. Too packed, shitty music (didnt see deep dish so maybe they rocked the place), and ya, it was more disorganized and the layout wasnt as nice as the Tech room (IMO).

To be honest, I had fun, but as soon as I started to get bored, I left. Armin was not interesting me all that much, if you've been listening to his recent ASOTs that was what he was playing (when I left, who knows what he finished with). Infected Mushroom was rockin the place actually, just not my type of music anymore. David Guetta was just too cheesy, I understand that he is a cheesy DJ but what he was doing was awful, iPod mixing of Dome tunes, Im actually suprised he didnt play Usher or Nelly.

And ya...

Oh and I forgot the look on Neo Hacker's face when he met Armin, then he instructed me not to post this on TA, whoops. Also Armin's manager/friend were pretty chill dudes, answering all our stupid questions, and actually starting conversations with us. Kudos to Armin for being able to form a coherent set with all those groupies in the booth with him. I shouldnt talk though, Im a Fanciulli groupie now officially.

Anyways ya, overall it was a fun night for me (the fact that it was free helps too), it sucks for all of you who missed it cause it was a GREAT vibe, lots of hot women in very little clothing, some good ch00ns and the sound system (apart from towards the end) was not THAT bad, my ears arent really ringing all that much.

BeB was pretty fun, if the same party was being held next week, I'd probably try to go.

hahahaha we had an MC!!@!2!!!

"Ladies and Gentlemen, fresh from the Netherlands, DJ... ARMIN... VAN... BUUREN"

Ohhhh this is gonna be a big review. If there are any spelling errors please allow me to apologize in advance, I'm still a bit "tired"

...

...

Arrived at 9. Tickets for 100 at the door. 100? I thought theyd be like 125! They only let us in at 10... ******s... ANYWAY...

Marco G... dude... fucking killer! I LOVE your sound and presence, it's electrifying! Mixing was spot on, tracks were amazing... well done.

FANCIULLI... Now guys, I've listened to a few Fanciulli sets and I wasn't impressed. BUT, wow, DJ of the night for me, set of the night for me. EXCELLENT!

Infected... issschhh... high energy music, tons of singing, it was great. I've seen IM three times now and I think that when youve seen infected once, you won't need to see them again. I LOVE INFECTED, DONT GET ME WRONG, but I think there was a DEEEEEEJAYYYYY that could've mixed the night up a bit...

ISCHHHH my pupils... AHHHHHHH....

David Guetta... THE WORLD IS MINE... fucking the-world-is-squished-into-a-can-meant-to-hold-7000-but-holding-11000.... I heard he spun some great electro later on, which I was absent for (read: IM), but I now understand why everyone says he's France's very own MC MARIO. Props for getting the crowd going though...

MALEK I SAW YOU WORKING THE CROWD TOO.... :P hehehehehhe

Stephan Grondin... WOW... this guy is going BIG places, He plays Montreal house and this is a style the world should be educated about.

ARMIN! AHHHH THE HOLY TRANCE SAVIOR! Good set, much harder than I expected. It's Armin, what more can I say?

Peter Rauhofer... hmmmmm missed much of his set... I guess he was having some technical issues since I heard the sound system give out twice from the outside hallway... :X

oh... peter played candy shop....

All kidding aside he's a VERY talented artist.... Mr. Madonna :P

Deep Dish... too tired... i'm sure someone else has something witty to say about Deep Dish...

Preach... well... I'm disapointed to be missing Preach's set but I know Jenn, Erika, Anne, Jay, Juan and Nick are on the dancefloor right now shaking their thangs. I passed by the tech room before leaving and saw that he had the place up in fire, complete with the trademark knob twitches...

All in all, WAYYYY better than last year. Better set-up, better bathroom configurations... well... almost better... I think the bathrooms is the main reason why BEB should be held at the OLYMPIC STADIUM ala Black & Blue and not at a place where you feel like sheep being herded into a stall to pee...

Quality of music was 100000x better than the last rave I went to, Celebration. But, then again, Oakenfold played at Celebration... maybe that might have something to do with it...

Not many ODers... no convlulsions on the dancefloor... PLUR... THERE I SAID IT... was definitely in effect. Except for the Guetta overload everyone was nice and would move out of the way or apologize for coming in front of you...

It was not fun to be stuck between thirteen shirtless SWEATY men while trying to run away from the French disco cheese....

LOUIS, VERMS, JAY AND PIPER (I LOVE YOU PIPER) ALL MADE IT OUT! WOUUUUUUUUUU!! I missed the peurfs... I think I caught Louis sleeping under the VIPs in the morning. :P Hehehehehhe. Great to see you out there Louis.

Happy birthday to Jay and a belated happy birthday to Vermz as well. Great to see you both.

Of course I gotta thank the west island crew, Dan, everyone else... thanks. Cheers to Erika, Nick, Shawn, Anne, Jay...

I PARTIED WITH JAY... well... I mean... he made fun of my dancing and mocked me for lacking a tan.... it was great man...

JENN! IN THE FLESH! Tons of fun sweety! Good chats. Hope to see you at Sander.

So... this is the new, super-duper, Markess rating system...

VIBE 10/10

Show me one person who can attend BEB and tell me that Toronto has a better vibe than we do.... we have people SCREAMING when Marco drops the bass just a bit... SCREAMING!

PEOPLE 8/10

You can't get a perfect ten on people. Everyone was nice and courteous but there were still the few that would step all over your shoes and interrupt you at the greatest drop ever...

AHHHHH FUCKING SHIRTLESS KONAN THE BARBARIAN TYPES AND RUINING THE PERFECT ZOCALO EXPLOSION...

But, just like last year, Bal en blanc brings out Quebec's prettiest girls and it shows. There were some BEAUTIFUL people there.

...

I'm a trance elf... I know... I only actually caught about two hours of Armin spinning so I guess that makes me more of a house head, right? :P :P

MUSIC QUALITY 8/10

Next year, scrap Rauhofer and Deep Dish. I'm all for IM, but I think a more dynamic DJ could've brought some diversity to the night. Maybe Ferry.... :P hehehehehhe

DECOR 8/10

The house room is perfect... not one problem. THE FUCKING STAGE IN FRONT OF MY DJ HIDING HIM AWAY FROM THE CROWD IS MY PROBLEM....

Cool 3D lights, but the mesh hanging from the ceiling seemed kind of useless. It just kind of hung from the top and stayed static all night...

OVERALL

VIBE 10/10
PEOPLE 8/10
MUSIC QUALITY 8/10
DECOR 8/10

That's about a 8/10 rating now isn't it? Cool. Definite improvement from last years mishaps... Tiesto...

...

Well, since I got some time to kill let me give some constructive criticism...

1. Make the rooms bigger. 25% bigger... David guetta pulling more than Armin... uhhhhhh can you say wtf?

2. Fanciulli was a good UNIQUE choice this year. And look, he killed it! DO IT AGAIN! Continue to book new up and coming talents (*cough* Zabiela *cough*)... pull them in with a headliner (Sasha!) and give them a little something different to taste. It makes you wonder who the better mixer is... Armin and Fanciulli? Taha will like that one....

DUDE TAHA, WHERE WERE YOU? I KEPT LOOKING FOR YOU ALL NIGHT! I kept looking for you behind the booth bobbing your head to some good prog-house....

3. LASERS! I know I sound like the ultimate PLUR fag BUT COME ON, they add soooo much to the party. Props for the Christmas lights blocking the DJ. Hehehehehe, they were cool, I'm being too rough.

4. BATHROOM ISSUE. Better than last year, yes, BUT, there's still much to fix. Why can't we have a Bal en Blanc on the football field at the Olympic Stadium? Why does Black & Blue get to keep their cool set-up? Why doesn't Danny T play at Palais de Congres and Armin/Guetta/Fanciulli/Rauhofer play at the Olympic Stadium?

I had a great time and I'd like to thank you all.

Malek, thanks for the pics man. I caught a glimpse of you at 9 in the morning and you looked DESTROYED. I hope you go home and get some rest. Some GLOBALSOUND dude came up to me and asked for a pic but I said I posed exclusively for Malek Racho over at EDMM. :P :P :P Thanks for all the hardwork mang.

Too many TA's to name... you know who you are.

5...4....3....2....1

BED.

(edit after I've notice how much I wrote: wow... don't ever expect another one like this because chances are you won't see it. :P)

(edit2: still bored...)

Remember... this is based purely on MY opinion...

...

BEST DJ: Nic Fanciulli

WORST DJ: Ummmm.... no one was bad? :P

BEST CROWD INTERACTION: Armin... surprised? Guetta got everyone pumped but I'm wondering what THE WORLD IS MINE has anything to do with it...

WORST CROWD INTERACTION: Ummmmm... Fanciulli didn't really pump up the crowd. I think he wanted to let the music do the talking... it worked. :P

BEST ROOM: HOUSE! Sorry tech. Better set-up.

BEST BOUTIQUE: I know Jay liked the dildo shop but I liked the little food cart out in the hallway. Mmmmm bananas...

I only met Malek again, surprised he remembered me!

And Dan, but I already knew him...

Also saw Neo Hacker walking around in the V.I.P. with his Oakley t-shirt...

I was the idiot with the JL SWEATSHIRT for those that care...

I love white clothing on girls White leather, pleather, spandex, lingerie, bikinis, you name it!!!

V.I.P. was hardly worth it this year... Lineup when I came at 1am was the same as the regular line, VIP bathrooms were taking longer than regular bathrooms, and you couldn't even get close to the DJ like at Celebration or at a smaller venue unless you had some super duper all night pass...

Nevertheless, amazing for my second massive and second after hours experience EVAR.

I came in when Faniculli was dropping this CRAZY house track which I know I have but don't know the name of, doesn't that suck?

David Guetta finished his set with SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT

Armin's set was good, but he didn't play as many songs that I wanted to hear...

I left after Preach opened his set with BROKEN INSIDE, I was satisifed when I heard that track!

Ok I'm so fucked up now I'll try to make a decent review

I got at the Palais des Congres around 10h and got inside like 15min later. I really enjoyed the VIP stuff where I get a free tshirt, free coat check and fast line. Only the bathrooms were so so but anyway.

Anyway I got inside when Marco G was playing. I've seen Marco G 3 times before the BeB and always enjoyed his set. He's a good dj and does really good warmup like he did at the BeB. I was impressed by the set, which was really good and got me into dancing within like 30 seconds!

Then Nic came. I must say that I was a bit perplex about Nic since he's an house DJ mostly. The songs were good but the beats were always the same and the breakdown were too long. I didn't hate him, but I wouldn't have asked an autograph, if you see what I mean. I got into the VIP area while Nic was playing, otherwise I was in the main dancefloor. Nic was a bit too much Tech/Techno for me, but that's just me.

Then came Infected Mushroom...ah the guys I've so heard about but never liked their cds or live sets. But I'm telling you my friend, after 2h of Infected Mushroom, I had to take a break 'cos I couldn't feel my feets anymore. They are so good ! And the vibe during their live set (with instruments) was amazing in the crowd ! I would like to see them again, maybe around Christmas ?

Ok do I really have to comment Armin ? Lol I think you all know how I feel toward Armin...deeply in love lol ! No seriously, I've been listening ASOT since 1 year now and I'm tuned in every week (and got them on my hard drive), and I agree that many songs are from ASOT, but I don't see that as a negative point. Armin can't just get new songs on tour and old songs on ASOT. And ASOT is what people like to listen, as the crowd when he does his gigs. Anyway, as Alex said I meet Armin for a couple of seconds. Just had the chance to shake his hands and congratulates him on his success and to go on. Call me a no0b if you want, I was really looking for this hand shaking, and I got his autograph too on my BeB ticket As for his set, TRANCEEEEEEE !!!!! One of the best I've heard from Armin, banging songs with melodies...I so love the song with lyrics "COntrol freak" Hey anyone who was in the VIP area : wtf was wrong with the damn speakers ?

I didn't stay long for Preach because I was tired. I stayed for like 20min but he did play very nice stuff. He should have played before Infected and Nic after Armin. I'm looking to see Preach again, I need more Mtl stuff

Ok I met A LOT of TAs...of course Alex, Enjoy, the_devils, Jester, Cyberflow (which I spent most of my night with and my friends), Malek (thanks for the picture!!), Layloula (sorry I must have written your nick wrong)...heh geez I know I forget some guys, sorry for that

Bottom line, Bal en Blanc was great. I had higher expectations but Armin was worth the price But to be honest, I prefered SWIRL last year...Lawrence, Liebing, Armin and B&J...that was just amazing!

Oh yeah and before I hit the Submit button, Enjoy is officially THE DJ Whore of TA. He always get in the booth if he wants

Thanks for the night TAs! I had fun with you

Forgot to say...

ARMIN

Free t-shirt? WTF!? I didn't get no damn free t-shirt!

Armin was switching the fade of the speakers at will, he's fade them completely to the dancefloor and bring it back to the monitors when he wanted to.

you had to arrive soon. Cyberflow got there at 1h30 I think and there was no one left.

that wasn't great for the vip area because the monitors were kind of our tops frequencies. Without them we had only mids and lows
