Invisible Grin ~REVIEW~ OAK-EN-F'ing-FOLD!, May 19th, at the Queen Mary!

Ok I was expecting pretty much NOTHING from this event, and I am comming out shocked!! I will write a much thorough review later, but right now I can say that even though oakie can't mix, can't beatmatch, even can't tell which cdj is playing....HE had probably one of the best TRACKLISTS I have ever heard in any live set!! I counted 23 trainwrecks. 1 cdj shutoff, and countless double bassing. If oakie could just work on those things...he would be one insane dj, I think he has the most important aspect down, an awesome tracklist!! More to come later

Updated: Ok so here is the full review, My 3 friends and I get to the queen mary around 8:30, there are 2 initial lines...willcall took a good 30 minutes and the other line for direct tickets took 5 mins. I know it got alot better afterward, looks like they had a hard time setting up their like 20 sheets of willcall last names. The next line was the metal detectors, that was a good 10 mins, but went by really fast...I've had worse (monster massive). We get inside and who do i see comming out from the bridge...JULIA!! I swear its been too long since I last saw you, was one of the biggest shocks! After a good restroom break, we head on in, the queen mary was totally blocked off, at least from what I saw and you had to go down 3 flights of stairs to go down to the dancefloor. On the dancefloor, Mark Lewis was starting his set, I personally thought it was ok until he dropped SOS, then it just got weird. I didnt think it had form, but maybe since I saw Victor last week, I am still in the mindset that the opener will be the best dj of the night . At first the dancefloor wasnt packed, but in a matter of like 20 mins...I couldnt see the sides anymore, This place was happening for sure! Within a matter of an hour, Simon appears next to me, really great seeing you man! He had an incident with one of these older "slutty" women, but I will let him discuss that Mike of interstate comes on and he begins to play some tunes, along with Layla? That was pretty cool! Reminded me of trance club heaven days with the live acts, really enjoyed the last song too, I found you...never heard it live and infact havent heard it in a long time! After that, Mark Lewis continues his set for a bit, this time it got a little stronger, much better. Out of nowhere, oakie comes on! And wow he sure did come on, His set was amazing from the very begining, right away first mix CLACK CLACK CLACK, I was expecting this though so it wasnt too bad, to my amazement...the set just got better and better. I was dancing too much before he dropped Mark Norman - Rush...WOW!! I exploded for a while, never heard this track in a club, and probably one of the best tunes I think to get a crowd moving! I seriouslly have never danced through so many trainwrecks in my life!!! As a dj you learn that this sound is as bad as chewing on ice or scratching a chalkboard, but Oakies tracklist overpowered it! I knew alot of the tracks, I just pinpoint the ID's right now, I will keep adding them afterward, but the next big one for me was Out of the Past - Mystery (Baker vs Gorczak Remix), that track was amazing on a live system! Again, I think just the joy of hearing good tracks that you have at home on a live system makes them that much better! Wow! talk about progression, oakie was really working it, his tracks just got better and better, along with the wrecks! He decides to drop Greece 2000 (Remix?) AHHHH!!!!! He had the place with everyones sardine packed hands in the air! Just as it was going into the second breakdown...he TURNS OFF THE CDJ!!! AHHHHHHH, I swear it was like a tease of one of the best songs!! We all just clapped and cheered!!! I thought to myself ok there is no way this set can get any better...BOY WAS I WRONG!!!! The next track was probably the best track of the night for me.... Insigma - Open Your Eyes (Original Insigma Mix) . This track is from my favorite set of all time (Magik 6+7), I couldnt move...this was an overload for my ears to really process what was going on and it felt REALLY REALLY good!! After that, I was sold...this set was probably one of the best trance-oriented sets in a long time, and I needed that!! Tiesto failed to bring this last week, as much as the hype said, I had little to no expectations from oakenfold and wow! I can now say that I have seen him live and really rocked out to one of his shows! The time was 2:45 AM and the lights came on...everybody out! Going up 3 flights of stairs after dancing was not pretty, I saw people stumbling and being carried up! Everystep was painful for me, but once we got out, the fresh ocean air was really refreshing, the usual barrage of flyers followed. All in all, I had alot of fun, I would dare say more fun here than at Avalon last week even though sound system sucked, Oakenfold was peaking at almost every track, insane amount of wrecks, cdj stopping and too many double basslines to count...but it was WORTH IT! I would definately go see oakenfold again! I hope I would have seen more TA's, but thanks again to the ones who said hi

who the fuck counts trainwrecks wow.. you obviously have no respect for what oakenfold has done for EDM throughout the years you were probably 9 years old when oakie was at his peak..

Edit: sorry, you were 11 when oakie cared about his mixing

Oakie surprised quite a few people last night and left them saying "WOW, he's getting down tonight and actually is better than the last few times we've seen him!"

Oh yeah, great track selection and I was impressed. I wasn't there to count trainwrecks but to enjoy the music and have fun!

The crowd was cool too.

Actually, me & him were talking at the begining of the night and we were joking about counting how many trainwrecks he was going to do!

Anyway, I was pretty impressed about Oakenfolds set too (and that's alot coming from me... a person who isn't into trance much anymore). I haven't seen him in 2 yrs, and I wasn't expecting his set to be that good. I liked the first half of his set alot! He played pretty hard, and he played alot of "WTF" songs! I was really impressed with his track selection. The 2nd half got a little too melodic trancey for me, although in his 2nd half, he played alot of classic tunes. I noticed a couple trainwrecks, but he fixed it really quickly.

I was REALLY frustrated with the crowd and how packed it was. After last night, I realized how much I appreciate Avalon & Spundae lol.

Another thing that annoyed me were the people in the VIP area. It really pays off to be a slutty looking girl with big boobs, fake blonde hair, and a fake tan..... it doesn't matter wtf your face looks like, as long as u look like a slut..... u can get backstage, on the stage, in the VIP area... whatever u want. It fuckin pissed me off! I noticed that the security gaurds were pretty much assholes if u weren't good looking enough.

I guess I've been around the scene a bit longer and tell the difference between a good set and garbage.
I've seen all the big name DJ's numerous times and all of them have had a bad night here and there due to technical issues. Which is acceptable. However trainwrecks are not acceptable from a world class DJ. Because there's no technical issues there.

You know who counts trainwrecks? Usually people that know their stuff pretty well. Personally I would've have given up after 5. If the DJ fails to generate a good vibe there's not much left to do then count trainwrecks!!!

A note for Starboy:
Respect is earned and respect is lost. Nothing is permanent. Sure he has done alot for scene but he's throwing it all away down the toilet now. Because the passion is gone and the only motive left is the all mighty dollar!!!!

You know your DJ skills have gone bad when your fans only remember you by the tracklist. Speaking of tracklist, what was so significant about last nights trackslist. 90% of were tracks from like 4 years ago. Sure they are great tracks but come on your a world class DJ people expect a little more from you. Such is never the case with Tiesto, PvD, or Sasha. Everyone want's to hear something new. Something to remember. There was a time on Oakey never had trouble with that. But now the passion is gone.

If you like watching re-runs with "technical issues" Oakey is your man!!!

LOL...your so funny Julia.

Truely it's not me. I have a headache too. It's the horrible sound system they had there.

its a little obvious that oakenfold isn't the technical dj nowadays, and there's probably a reason why he was playing old stuff.. kind of like a blast from the past, wish i could have been there.. oakie doesn't need to prove anything to me and im a die hard edm fan, and have been for a long time.

how does one manage 11.5 trainwrecks per hour anyway? that's gotta be wrecking every transition he made...
