I have a dilemma...

So, the other day, walking along and this lad I half know, who lives near me says hi, and he asks me if I am interested in some dj equipment.
He knowing I wanting to dj, so he not just asking random people for gear.
BUT... he takes me into his house, and shows me this set-up.
Now, I didn't get a good look, and most of the time I was watching my back and chatting with him about other stuff, as he offered me a joint a few times.lol
But from what I saw he was selling a Gemini bpm250: http://www.abra.co.uk/SALES/MIXERS/BPM250.HTML

And 2, yes 2 numark decks, which I believe looked pretty much like this one: http://www.colorproduction.com.hk/i...mark_tt1650.jpg the tt1650, but I wouldn't swear to it.

Now the reason I say 2 twice is because he put a price on them, a very good price, or a very bad price depnding on which way you look at it, as £180.
Now, I am a bit strapped for cash, and my set-up is dieing on me.
I have a holiday in ibiza in 4weeks today.
Yet a part of me that just urges for decent equipment wants to go on a limb and buy this gear, as as that price I don't see it staying with him long, and after I back from ibiza I have a wedding to go to, and save up for, as its an important one, and I have various other bills to be paid.

What do I do?
Help.

I don't know anything about those numark decks, but I wouldn't pay more than five bucks for that gemini.

Well, I've heard avoid pretty much any Gemini equipment. And I have a feeling the TTs are nothing special but other people would know better.

1650's are pretty good for a beginner deck, but if you already have a set up its no upgrade (unless you havebelt drives).

They don't have the longest lifespans and if they are a bit used the pitch will waver noticably.

I wouldn't recommend getting them unless you are just starting out. However if you do get them you will be ace at pitch bending

I wouldn't though. You may as well save for longer and either get them new or something else second hand. Especially if you are a bit tight at the moment, used 1650's can either be good (hardly used) or a bit shoddy (the usual case).

They aren't the worst deck, but unless you were just starting out I'd say no. And if you're getting them second hand I'd say no.

That's not really a good deal, I sold a pair of Numark 1650's and a DM1001 for 110 (USD) bucks on ebay. There are better deals out there.

Cheers for the advice, I'll pass.
I have belt-drives btw if your all wondering, which is why I REALLLLLYY need to get new equipment, they've not been bad my belts, but it's getting a bit hard to have fun when you have to constantly change each of the decks pitch to make it on 33/45.
Can be fun some days as I think that this pissing about may help me in the future as if I get a good set our of bad, dieing decks I will be better equiped for when I get a decent set of decks.

But other days I get so frustrated I want to throw them against my wall...

I learned on the 1650's or was it the 1625's. I cant remember but they were black and direct drive. They were perfect to learn on but soon outgrew them and they didnt last much longer after that either.. 6 months or around that. And you can buy them with a mixer for about £250 anyways.

I know everyone says this but save your money for 1210s. SERIOUSLY! You will keep them instead of buying sub standard decks and selling them off..Trust me you WILL be selling them off.. Put it into perspective.. My decks were £400 the pair (secondhand). I bought a cheap mixer (everyone upgrades mixers so buy a cheap thing just to learn on (I had a numark dm950 which I paid £25 for) So for £425 I had a setup that was useable. Then 6 months down the line I paid out £230 and got my 3 channel stanton mixer.

bottom line. save your money -> buy techs = winner!

I bet the guys is selling off his gear cos he realises how shit it all is now! dont fall into the trap..

heres a post I saved off here a while back...

Here is the reason that you should get technics 1200SL decks:

one of two things is going to happen when you get your technics. Either:

a) you will love them, and decided that you are loving DJ and you never want to stop. In this case, you are in a great position. You have the same deck as almost every club in the world, and every DJ in the world. You will never need to upgrade your decks, and you know that they will last literally DECADES if you take care of them.

OR

b) you will decided DJing is not for you, and decide to sell your decks. In this case, you will probabally be able to sell them for about as much as you bought them for, and maybe even more. Just take a look on www.ebay.com and watch how many bidders are after a set of tech12s, and you will quickly realize how valuable these decks are.

So, there is is, get technics, it's win-win situation.

Then, there is another option. You can get cheaper, lower quality decks. in that case, the same two things can happen:

a) you love DJing, but are frustrated that your decks don't hold pitch, have no torque, skip like a schoolgirl, have as many breakdowns as a set of oakenfolds from '99, vibrate near any sound source, or whatever else. or even just that they don't feel the same as the decks at clubs and raves, so you learn on yours at home, then try to beatmatch on techs in front of a crowd and get tomatoes thrown at you. in anycase, you'll be wanting to sell these decks. problem being, nobody is going to want to buy them. if you can sell them, i can almost guarantee you won't get what you paid for them. most likely, they will collect dust in your attic or basement, or be sold for a pittance to some wannabe DJ who doesn't know any better.

OR

b) you hate DJing. In this case, you will want to sell your tables, and will encounter the same problems as in point a. It could even be that you hate DJing just cuz you had crappy tables. (don't give up till you try a pair of tech12s, for me that was the closer, i just loved the feeling)

so, crappy decks, it's a lose-lose situation.

now, there are a few more things to think of. everything that is not a tech12 is not neccesarily a crappy deck! there are others that have just as high torque, low wow and flutter, good insulation from vibration etc. these include the Numark TTX-1 (and NUMARK TT-500, the same motor and build, but without the fancy display), the stanton STR-100 and STR8-150, and higher end vestax models.

However, NONE of these tables can boast the reputation of techs for longtime durability, simply because they haven't been around that long. and most cost almost as much as technics anyway.

overall, in choosing a DJ deck, i think technics are your best bet. Numark TTX1 is a close second, but i won't be buying one for another 3 or more years, when i start hearing about their reliability. Stanton are pretty good too.

Above all don't even CONSIDER buying belt drive decks.

those numark TT's will be an upgrade for you. if you can get the ones w/an S-arm, even better. you will enjoy mixing a lot more than you are now. i started on belts. i bought one numark DD table, and it made a huge difference. instead of having two beltdrives constantly wavering, i just had one beltdrive mis-behaving.

since you are doing the private party purchase... i would not recommend buying them. i ended up returning my numark a few days after i bought it, because it had a straight arm. stupid thing wouldn't play some of my records all the way to the end.

at this point i was pretty frustrated, and finally decided to scrape and save until i bought my first m5g, a few months later, the second m5g.

in the end, i'm w/trancecadet. save for the techs. you will not be sorry. you will either totally fall in love w/dj'ing, or get your money back if you decide to slang the decks and give up dj'ing once and for all.
