Cancer - Effected at a young age? Advice Appreciated!

Ok well, some of you on here might know exactly what I'm talking about (to the one who knows who may read this, im not making this public)

Has anyone dealt with a family member, friend, or loved one who has recently been diagnosed with cancer? I've been searching my sole for solace, peace, and tranquility. A friend of mine who I recently got to know has just been diagnosed and I am literally heart broken at the moment. I need some support in this matter, I need to hear if anyone else has been affected by this. What can I do? What should I do? I'm starting to collect some care package stuff to send to the friend, but I feel that isn't enough. Some might say you can only help so much, I think no matter what the outcome is, my prayers and hope and effort can help beat this together. Reality is, it's a crutch on a persons life, I understand and accept that, but my will doesn't want to accept it. I believe there is more we can do to help a person fight something like this.

Please share your advise and suggestions...I appreciate it.

I have been in this situation with close family members but none were very young. The treatment is going to be hard (possibly painful depending on the type of cancer the person has)the best thing that you can do is be there for this person for times of comfort. They will need the support of they're freinds and family to get through this and fight it out. I hope that proper treatment and care helps your friend get better and recover.

her parents took her home right away, she's going through her chemo right now. Some friends are going to see her, I want to start with a care package ASAP. I just don't know how to cope. I teeter between unacceptance and acceptance, wishful thinking and reality, hope and despair. It's not a dramatic thing and it's a dramatic thing all at the same time.

Sorry to hear about your friend. I worked in the chemo unit for patients with leukemia and lymphoma for a couple years actually. If you'd like more info on support groups or just want to talk one on one, I'm here. It's always really hard especially when the person is our age. There's never an easy way to come to terms with why and how these things happen, but your friend is lucky to have a compassionate friend like you.

Some people get involved with volunteer work, so they feel like they're doing something proactive to battle the disease. It's therapeutic for the patients, families, and friends. Or if you want to come by the hospital to have a better understanding of the treatment process, I could take you around MSK. Just being more informed and facing the reality also takes away some of the scariness and anxiety.

No prob. ::HUG::

I've been working here for nearly 3 years and there are times I still get sad and angry about how unfair it seems. On the flip side, trials like this also show how strong the human spirit can be. People gain a new sense of perspective on what's really important in life.

Cancer.gov is a solid resource: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/types/leukemia

And this is from our hospital's website: http://www.mskcc.org/mskcc/html/373.cfm

Within those pages are links specifically about young people affected by the disease.

so sorry to hear about your friend. the best you can do is to let her know that you are thinking about her and praying for her - just be there as a friend for her and support her.
