Hi people, hoping someone can help me out here, I have my PC hooked up to my speakers, and I'm looking for an equalizer to play around with to see if I can enhance the sound at all (mainly at the low end) I've tried a few free plugins for windows media player, but the sound quality seems rather poor, I'm looking for a stand alone equalizer if that's possible, so I was wondering what programmes/plugins you guys use, if any?

Check the control panel, there might be something there to EQ your soundcard. Creative cards have an EQ program, as did my onboard sound.

I've had the same problem with my speakers. I've got a 5.1 home theatre and when I connect my laptop to these speaker to hear some live sets they sound absolutely pathetic. The bass just isn't there!! I am thinking it's got more to do with the quality of music rather than an issue with speakers. Try playing some DVD on ur speakers from the computer drive and see if that indeed the problem

WMP sucks real bad. Its a very poor media player. Try winamp. The plugins available for it alone is more than a good enough reason to ditch WMP.

Ok, I have an M-Audio Delta 1010LT sound card, I already tried looking in windows control panel, and in the actual sound card control panel but no equalizer, I also looked for plugins compatible with the sound card but no luck.

About the sound quality, you are right, but that's just mp3's for you, and the reason I'm looking for an EQ. I know I'll never get the sound quality as good as a vinyl, I'm mainly looking to boost the low end.

As for winamp, I tried it a long time ago and found it too gimmicky. I prefer the simple layout of WMP, as in the end, all I'm doing is listening to music, I have no need for the thousands of plugins. The built in EQ on WMP was the first thing I tried, but as I said the sound quality was poor.

So basically I'm looking for a professional stand alone equalizer, if there is one. Thanks for the replies so far anyway, if anyone has any more suggestions please let me know.

I assumed you were using good speakers, but....are you?
I have some Creative speakers which just have no bass, no EQ would fix that.

Winamp has a built in EQ which does its job and the gimmicky stuff, as you put it, can be turned off.


Looks to me like you are using cheap speakers or a poor audio source.

I just use the equalizer in Windows Media Player to raise the bass & treble a bit. I have no complaints about WMP or quality MP3s messing with the sound. I have a little set of 2.1 H-K speakers including a sub, sounds OK for trance/house, better overall than an external receiver and stereo speakers without a sub.

My speakers are not the problem, when I spin on my decks the sound is perfect. When I play tunes in WMP, I simply turn up the low on my mixer and it sounds fine, however, if I leave the low at 0 and use the built in EQ to raise the bass I get distortion and a muffled sound. I'll probably try Winamp again, the thing is I have hundreds of playlists that I don't want to lose, hopefully there's some way of importing them.

Also, I mess about on Traktor a lot, and it's rather awkward having to have the low turned all the way up when trying to mix and judge the levels.

Maybe your soundcard has too much signal and is clipping when you're turning up the bass. An alternative method is to just turn down the mids and highs on the computer (WMP or Traktor etc) equalizer. Does the same thing (emphasizes the bass) but without raising the output signal and sometimes it sounds better that way. Similar thing is often done with a regular analog external equalizer.
