Me and my friend are getting into talks about getting some decks as just a hobby (for now). He used to own some vinyl decks and a mixer, but it was actualy stolen by a good friend of his. I played on them for a bit and it was a blast. Well, fast forward 2 years and he recently approached me about buying some CD tables and a mixer. I'm all up for the idea, but I don't know too much about what I'm getting into. So, just a couple of quick questions:

1. We're looking into getting some CD "turntables" (if thats what u can call them.) Is there any negative to this, other that the negative vibe from Vinyl enthusiasts?
2. Are there any difference in playback quality from cheap to expensive tables? What makes one more expensive than the other?
3. I'm primarily into trance and he's into hip hop. Are there specific preferences for mixers based on music type (i dunno, like the range of equalizer options)
4. Whats the big deal about headphones? Just quality or are some headphones better at differenciating the channels to beat match?

ok well that sucks that his equipment got stolen...some friend eh? well anyways...to be honest different genres mean that your both gonna have to compromise on equipment because people that come from different musical backgrounds buy different equipment...thats not to say there's no middle ground. please realize that if this is something your not ready to spend time with and LOTS of money on then perhaps you could try borrowing equipment for a while from other people or something...itd be a shame if you put major $$$ into this and got sick of it after a couple months.

1. CD Players (or cd decks) are very widely accepted and only douchebags would grill you for not going vinyl...
2. playback quality is generally the same unless your getting real crap decks (ie $99 equipment) etc. the price differences come mainly in features not quality of playback. every model has a different feature than the next and i think others will elaborate on this if you ask more specific questions.
3. hip-hop mixing requires specifically mixers that would be more preferable for scratching and tables that focus on scratch capability (not present in low-end CD player models). trance is more about beat-mixing. if you want to compromise on equipment i recommend getting pioneer CDJ-1000's for cd players and for mixer...cant help you out there, im into trance so i would recommend for trance, maybe a pio djm600 or maybe a vestax PCV 275. i dont know...im assuming your gonna want entry level equipment but if i said go get a pair of CDJ-200's you wouldnt be able to scratch however their great for trance.
4. headphones are VERY important...whats the point of dj'ing if you cant hear freaquencies on your cue channel that might conflict with what the crowd is gonna hear???


perhaps you should read up on a lot of the threads already here and do some searching for information to get more familiar with trance dj'ing and hip-hop djing...use google and use the search function on this forum. good luck!

I own a pair of Pioneer CDJ-800 mk2's. Just got em a few weeks ago. I think they're the perfect balance for trance and hip-hop bc you can scratch for the hip-hop and are more affordable than the 1000s. Although if you're splitting them, 1000s are the club standard.


Also take a look at the Denon line of cd players. I've heard the 3500 and the 5000 are good for hip-hop scratching.

it's possible for you guys to share decks... but i suggest that you guys each get you're own mixer.

if he's a serious scratcher, i don't think he'll dig something as large, w/long faders like a rane mp44.

you will never be able to mix trance an a rane TT56i or what ever it's called the same way can mix it on a mp44. you CAN mix trance on a scratch mixer... but if you get the chance to spin a real mixer that's designed for us, as opposed to a hip hopper. you'll wonder why if not outright hate yourself for buying a scratch mixer.

here's a cheap beginner's setup that will work for both trance/hiphop

2x denon dn-s1000. has scratch and effects to fuck around with.
1x numark, behringer cheapo 2 channel mixer. doesn't matter yet.
1x pioneer mdr-7506 headphones or cheaper. doesn't matter yet.

that's about as cheap as it gets for a decent setup. i would worry about the mixer last, there's always room for upgrade later.
