The MC boxes are excellent if you want to create pattern based music and "perform" it, live. You can certainly produce with them but I don't feel it is their strength. If you want to create some dance tracks where you can mute, effect, fade, filter or in other ways mangle sounds or parts in realtime, nothing beats grooveboxes, software included! Programs like Ableton are becoming better performance tools but the hardware interface of an MC-505 has a lot of knobs and sliders to tweak with the ability to use two or more functions per knob or slider using shift and function buttons. Try making custom controller maps with several functions per key or slider to match up with your synth and effect VSTs in your host and see how tedious it is to setup and remember.
I don't know why it's becoming en vogue to bash grooveboxes as toys. If a synth being fun makes it a toy, I have a studio full of toys.
