i have a citronic mpcd-4 dual cd player. its barely 4 months old and surely it can't die this soon??? can it??

anyone got any ideas or help to see if i can revive it?

I'm afraid it can die that easily. If you bought it new from a shop demand a replacement. By law they only actually have to fix it but if you kick up enough of a fuss they might just give you a new one. If it's second hand, you can have a go at fixing it, as you should be able to tel relatively quickly if you are able to fix it or not.

Unplug the power!!!!
undo all the screws that hold the housing and be sure to record where thay all go. Then look to see if any ribbon style cables or connectors are loose and push them firmly back home. Check the CD laser for dirt and clean with a q-tip and switchcleaner (or perfume with high alcohol content). Make sure the band on the laser motor drive is in place. Check the main PCB to see if there are any components which look fried and if there are you go get professional help.

Afetr doing these steps (and putting it back together before pluggin it back in), if it still does not work then you need to get an authorised service centre to give you a quote on getting it fixed.

Do bear in mind sometime contacting the manufacturer direct can pay off. I had a computer monitor that was well out of warranty and was given to me that didn't work. I called them and told them it just died and I only bought it about 6 months before(lie) and they swapped it out for the latest model - Result

Check that openning the case wont void the warrenty.
You get what you pay for. You will be able to get it replaced/fixed for sure but how likely is it to run into more problems?

its only 3 months old so it is under warranty. left it over night and tried again. same thing. this is so annoying. ill just give the place i bought it from a call. i wonder if its worth trying again with it or just demand money back and get something else more reliable.

Go for a different unit. Don't get me wrong - citronic are ok for the money (becuase they are cheap)and I hate to say it but you do get what you pay for.

It's the law?

I doubt that very much.

Absolutely true. Within the UK selling guidelines, the retailer/manufacturer only has to offer a direct warranty replacement within a set period from point of purchase. This period can also be set by the shop/manufacturer and some are making it as short as they want (ie 48hrs). This can be done because the receipt can have terms and condidtions that set out that sellers returns/repairs policy. In most cases it is 3 months, after which the unit will be sent back to the manufacturer for repair and once completed the same unit will be sent back to the customer. Some shops might choose to give a replacement as a gesture of goodwill (outside of this period) but unfortunately by law, they only actually have to offer to repair it - nothing more.
