I am speaking of course about today’s trance and not trying to resurrect anything from the 90’s and early 00’s. A lot of the tracks I’ve included in the zip file below are from widely known artists whose lesser known tracks I want to revisit and also reflect my taste. When selecting these samples I tried to cover a wide range of trance using a 10 track limit so pardon me if I have missed some major tunes. Overall it is intended to be representative of my idea of the way trance is supposed to be, hence the title.

As hinted above I went back and revisited a couple tracks that truly struck a chord in me big time. These tracks are recent examples of trance that I wish producers would make more of today. To give you an introduction on some of the music in the zip file below I’d like to brief you about the first track called ‘Turn It Around’ by 4 Strings. There was a remix done by Sander Van Doorn under his Sandler alias which packs a lot of emotion into one track, mostly darkness or sadness as if trying to tell a story. Personally its Sander’s best work to date and just one example of what I’m talking about. The second track I want to mention is by 24. 24 isn’t actually an artist, but a television program that’s really big here in the states. Anyways Armin Van Buuren was tapped on the shoulder by FOX networks to do a remix for the main score/theme for the program 24 and the result was this masterpiece released in 2005. The track itself is borderline progressive, but more trance than anything else. Last but not least is ‘Marrakech (Revolution Mix)’ by ATB. Released in 2004 this has got to be one of his rarer productions of what an artist is capable of doing given the right circumstances. The rest I’ll leave up to you guys to delve in.

After listening to those tracks I want to know if you guys share the same vision in trance as I do and if not what are some of your recent tunes that you believe define the way trance should be?

how trance should be?... personally, I think thats a stupid question. reason being, trance is so massive in size. it varies really. hard trance, melodic, deep, cheese, peakhour. lets remove that question. It brings many elitist thoughts. Ive taken a look at your track selection and i respect that youve taken the time to put something like this together. you obviously have passion, and isnt that what really counts. i can recall pretty much all of those tracks, hell i liked them too. big blank and jones fan, atb as well. sanders work is amazing, i was addicted to his theme for a while. But right now, im really in love with tracks that are coming out. intuition, anjunabeats, anjunadeep, somatic sense. labels along and between those lines are releasing some real beautiful work.

Good selection, Cern - the message i always thought should have been a huge tune

So you cut out a dozen or so aimless, idiotic 1+ minute long breakdowns ripped out of bombastic circus anthems, zipped them together and posted them under the guise of "how trance is supposed to be".

Fucking hilarious.

This is akin to Avril Levigne calling her debut album "the way punk is supposed to be." These tracks represent everything that's WRONG with trance today. The trite anthems. The predictable, boring, overly-long breakdowns. The rip-off pads and leads replicated in every track.

Somewhere right now, Simon Berry and Mark Reeder are hurling things at people. They are most likely trying to hit you.

I say, (try to) enjoy whats out there right now. Trance is still a very new genre compared to other forms of music. Just listen to some of the songs and think about how simple some of the melodies are, compared to say complicated sounding music like classical.

As long as where alive there will constantly be new artists coming out with tracks which they feel is "the way trance should sound" and this is actually very good, because the more variety, the more people are likely to enjoy it.

Eventually, when its possible to create something exactly the way you want it, not just something that is limited by the technology it is made on, we will see even more variety. Because right now to me, it sounds like trance is limited by the fact that its made with the technology of today. Like if you listen to stuff from early 90's you can tell its a lot less like the music released today, because the technology wasnt there to be able to create anything better.

So in the end, this topic is pointless, because there is no way that trance should sound in particular. TO ME...the people that are constantly saying that trance isnt as good as it used to be, are just saying that because they got used to the trance that was released when they started listening, and now that its changing, and other forms of the music are becoming more popular they dont enjoy it as much as the stuff that got them interested in the first place. While others who arre just getting into it, are enjoying it as if it was the best thing ever, and they may eventually feel the same way about music that will be released in say 5 to 10 years from now.

BTW, I am going to say thank you for the samples you are providing. It is a good way to see what others are interested in. Now I am not saying that I dont like them, but they arent something that I would listen to if I had a choice of other music. To each their own.

I´m so happy you´ve said that. My thoughts exactly.

Plus, as I always say, people are emotionally bound to the tracks and the "type of trance" that got them into it, so it´s really hard for them to find out and accept the world has changed, the music has changed and is changing right now as we are speaking. These emotional ties and memories also make people think "their" trance is the right one and the one and only.
