As long as the game works with NiWiFi and you have access to said Wifi network, the online gameplay is free and you can play either random people or search for friends list people online to game with.

Wow I have to try this. I just got a DS Lite and really am clueless as it these capabilities.
What is this NiWiFi? What's its cost? Where do u put it in?

nintendo's own wifi network. it allows players to connect to players around the world. all you need is a wireless connection at home that connects to the internet. it's FREE. and you'll know if a game is NiWiFi capable because it'll be on the box.

Two things to expand on that:
1) You can play the wifi games in various other locations with WiFi hotspots. I've heard success stories in Starbucks, Paneras and a few airports.
2) There's this little doohicky that'll help you out if your connection isn't wireless. Be forewarned, though. It only works with broadband connections.
