But do keep in mind there is difference in Dj changing his or her name and same Dj using an alias to release a track.

e.g. Ferry Corsten is also known as System F or Skywalker
Sander Van Doorn - Sam Sharp, Sandler, Purple Haze

M.I.K.E. is famous for aliases, he has over 84 different names under which he has released over 200 tracks.

well ive noticed quite a few TO dj's doing it and im just curious why. in some cases i really liked the name they chose and then they changed it all of the sudden

Yea, I dun seem to get this either. I feel it is almost stupid to use more than even one name. This industry has a lot to do with recognition and with people having so many aliases, it makes it extremely hard for the typical listener to appreciate the artist behind the productions.

Maybe the DJ/Producer wants to try something new without tarnishing their name or reputation. I've heard that Armin Van Buuren wanted to release some house tracks under a different alias. Same with Sander Van Doorn under Purple Haze to make darker sounding trance.

But I don't get why DJs would change their names, they build a reputation for their name and changing it would mean they would have to rep behind that name.

I hear Jelo is changing his name to Pudding-Pot...

recognition = expectations. If an artist/DJ/producer wants to try something that is a far step from what they usually do, they may rather do it under a new name so people don't complain 'that its not like their other stuff'.

While it may be a perfectly solid track, it may get slagged for not sounding like their other stuff, where if its under a new moniker, its judged upon it's own merrits and not the reputation behind it, which may be a bonus in the artists eyes (as not everyone keeps up on what each producers various aliases are)

Say, Audion vs Matthew Dear - if he's booked as Audion, I would expect a different type of set/sound than if he was booked as Matthew Dear.

Also, if I get an Audion track, I'm expecting a certain sound when compared to a False track.

So in short, it lets artists explore various different persona of their production/DJ styles while avoiding getting pigeonholed into the sound that their main-name is famous for.

There's actually a very simple reason why it was so common for an artist to have many aliases, and that is exclusivity of the name to the label.

What does this mean? Well it means if I sign a record under Arnej to Armada, and they want exclusive rights to the name, it means I can no longer use that name elsewhere.

In some cases, it simply means the artist wants to do something outside of the norm, so he chooses another name.

Reason why some of these guys chose to go back to one name is because it's easier for the everyday fans to relate to one name (Ferry Corsten) than it is a dozen other aliases.
