MIDI input/output - different jacks

My synth (very old) has MIDI in/out jacks which are circular, and "half-filled", if you know what I mean.

But my soundcard (M-Audio Delta 44) has a single trapezoidal MIDI jack, with two rows, 4 and 5 holes in each row respectively. I also have the red/white Belkin jacks but those are not MIDI.

So how do I connect my synth to my soundcard?

Check out the manual of your delta, should be explained in there.

the Delta 44/66 cards do not have MIDI i/o's. I've owned both at one point and they did not have MIDI i/o's at all. Though, I find it extremely hard to believe that you're not sure the model/make of your own sound card.

Alot of firewire cards these days have the trapezoid jack that you're speaking of and that usually means theres a breakout cable with the corresponding cables, usually MIDI and S/PDIF. Even some PCI cards have it, like the Audiophile cards.

I'm not sure if any of this helps.

couldn't it be the "gameport" or joystick in?

you can connect midi devices to your joystick port with some...cable...

I'm not sure though but can't it be the case?

my card has midi-in midi-out and the trapezoid joystick in

The trapezoidal port on the back of the card is the interface that connects to the 4-in/4-out breakout box. The Delta 44 has no midi capabilities whatsoever.

If you want a midi interface whilst still using the Delta 44, then I would recommend you score a separate usb midi interface. They're relatively cheap.
