Hi everyone,
This is my first post around here, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with doing sort of light trancy type albums? I'm into stuff like Above and Beyond, Chicane, IIO, Armin etc.

I'm after peoples thoughts on when the tracks should fade in and out, (CDJs esp.) should tracks finish completely b4 the next one starts? Any other advice would be much appreciated, I've never done anything like this before...

So you reckon mixed is better? When you say mixer do you mean a person or a console? I dont have either... but I've got pro tools so I'll just have to use automation curves, Thats gonna be great fun! Not!

Anyway, I was just curious about the whole track thing because I thought maybe unmixed was easier to put into a dj set or something, I use Ableton live though so I dunno about CDJs or whatever...

I guess it depends upon who your market is going to be - if you are producing an album that you hope DJs will pick up and spin certain tracks from, then obviously the gap between tracks is your friend; if you are producing it for punters to put on in their cars or listen to before they go out, a well mixed album is a must - which means also you have to structure the album like you would a DJ set.

ableton is apparently very good for such things, but I would tend to use CDJs if you are an excellent beat mixer/chromatic mixer - or traktor DJ studio which gives you the benefit of re-doing any mixes you mess up.

Um.. I guess I should have mentioned... they are all original tracks, Palm, I hope you werent thinking I was just gonna burn some Other peoples tracks to a CD and call it a mix !

Like many Ableton DJs I have no concept of Beat matchng because I've always stayed away from Vinyl and am only starting to DJ (or try) now, but Optik you say that DJs prefer unmixed so thats probably the best route for me anyway, let tiesto or someone worry about mixing my tracks (yeah right!).

By the way I do have some idea what I'm doing with Pro Tools (not so much Ableton) it's just that I've always done more rock based stuff before (which are never mixed obviously) and now I want to do some trance because I love the style and I'm not 100% sure about the conventions. Should I post some tracks when they're done?
It'll be a few more weeks at least before I get the first ones out (could actually be months ) but they might come out alright...maybe.

Ha Ha! Airwave's latest Cd is ridiculous! I mean one of the thngs I've always liked about trance is the value for money but three CDs? Oh well better than some pop people who release 45 minute cds and charge $35! I havent heard much yet, my copies supposed to be coming in four weeks but I'll be curious to see how he does it. What would be some good ways of softly fading tracks in and out ambiently, just do it with volume levels or should I introduce some reverb or a whole new synth line with a pad like sound?
