Question Digital Camera Repair

Does anyone know any good(cheap) repair shops which will replace/repair a scratched up LCD screen on a camera. Or possibly a kit that I can purchase and do it myself.

Before anyone mentions that the scratches have no effect on picture quality - the camera isn't mine, it was loaned to me and there's no way I'm returning the camera scratched up. It's a Canon 30D, if anyone knows any specialty shops.

Thanks!

ive heard that if scratches on a surface like that aren't serious, that its possible to get them "removed" at a jewelery shop, but ive only Heard this, ive never tried it myself, or seen the results, but it wont hurt to ask...

I think Henry's does repairs but they'll probabbly charge you an arm and a leg...still worth giving them a call if not they have a lot of repair shops they can refer you to.

Another good thing you could do is contact the manufacturer and they can tell you where you can get it repaired...

My shoestring budget idea...

I think CD/DVD repair kits may do the job. The kind that coates the CD to remove the scratches to make them readable again. Practice on a CD first, to see if that will have the desired effect on your screen.

It may work similarly to this stuff I sponged on my vinyl window on my Miata convertible to remove scratches (common problem) I had there.

Another idea may be to buy a replacement LCD screen on ebay and just swap them out. I have no idea how hard that is, but I know people have replaced broken LCD cellphone screens with no problems.

some lcd screens on digital cameras have a thin plastic cover over the actual screen itself. you might be able to repair that plastic with the cd repair technique or just replace the plastic itself.
if the lcd does not have that protective plastic shield then you will want to contact henrys or vistek or the manufacturer for more info.

You can order a new screen from Canon and do it yourself.

If you're capable of getting to Hamilton FotoVideo on Upper Ottawa and Stonechurch will also do it for a reasonable price.. it's where we outsource camera repairs from Future Shop that are no longer under warranty.

Awesome, thanks for the replies so far.

To clarify further - I didn't damage the actual LCD, just the cover which is replacable. The only problem is that I can't get the needed part #, since for some reason Canon doesn't have the parts catalogue for 30D. But, as far as I know 5D has the same LCD cover/screen so I'm going to try to order that part instead. Hopefully this doesn't bite me in the ass

CD/DVD repair kits is something I'm going to try for sure, as I have nothing to lose

The screen on my Canon SD300 cracked just recently. My dad purchased a replacement screen and changed it himself. I'm not at home right now, but I'll ask him for where he ordered it and the website for the instructions - with pictures.

You can order the screens from Canon themselves, but I believe they're a bit more expensive.

You're better off changing it yourself...it'll be way over priced if you get it done at a repair shop.

Canon has a customer service department in their main facility in Mississauga where you can actually go and give your camera for repairs or request extra parts of whatever...I've been there before and had the worst customer service EVER but you could still give it a try.

Another thing to consider is how old the camera is and what was used to purchase the camera. Many credit cards give you extended warranty and protection if you used a credit card...

My parents did that...they paid on Mastercard for my old camera a few years ago, and Mastercard doubled the warranty.

Awesome...yeah that's what I did with my previous camera as well...most credit cards don't really advertise that but they double the warranty for most items usually it's only the gold/platinum types tho
