Whiners try to stop new skateboard park
And then they ask "why are kids getting into so much trouble these days?"
People make me sick
| quote: | Skateboarders are usually the ones blamed for making too much noise, but yesterday they were the quiet ones.
Instead, senior citizens, parents with young kids, environmentalists, retirees, bird watchers and fervent local residents were the ones yelling, screaming and calling out their local councillor at a lunchtime meeting.
Etobicoke-Lakeshore Councillor Mark Grimes was under siege from about 120 people over a proposed $500,000 skateboard park slated for Colonel Samuel Smith Park.
"This park is passive nature, it's not a sport complex park," said resident Diana-Lyn Melnyk. "This is not something to be rushed and pushed down our throats."
The skateboard park is planned for an area -- adjacent to the Power Plant --which some residents claim is full of nesting birds and wildlife. A biologist determined the park would not impact on the natural environment.
Etobicoke businessman Jay Mandarino, identifying himself as a skateboarder who's helped design more than 200 skateboard parks, said the location will flop.
"The location is off the beaten path," Mandarino said. "It's going to attract the wrong kind of skaters."
Skaters complain they can't go anywhere without being harassed, so being away from houses is good. However, they're upset the design is not challenging; it's been taken back to the drawing board.
"This is a perfect spot," said Lazar Grigorov, 17, who arrived with a board and his hand in a cast from a recent wipeout. "If they change the location people will complain about the noise."
Former councillor Irene Jones claimed there were other possible sites and Grimes promised to examine them. |
Sadly Lazar Grigorov has learned very young about how intolerant his country really is.
