Woho...everyone cool down.

He asked in a nice way and probably doesn`t know that this topic has been discussed a few times before, so no need to be rude (which I`m sure Civic didn`t want to be).

Here`s the answer to your question:

Trading via mail has two downsides for most of us:

1. If you don`t really know the person you`re dealing with, there`s no guaranty that someone just keeps the money/cd that`s being send by the other side and sends nothing back. Ebya is an easy solution here.

2. Most of us are on a broadband connection (mostly dsl here) so we have very good donwload rates and can get the sets we want without the hassle of sending them via mail, so there`s no need to do that for most of us.

BUT as Civic already said: This is a place for sharing! Sharing is different from leeching, which means that you don`t only take what`s being offered but that you also give something! So, if you need a set then open an ftp on your pc and I`m sure someone here is willing to upload something to you.

Sorry to say, that mail is no option to us, but we are willing to help you and save you some bandwith by uploading something to you if you ask.

If you need any help with opening an ftp or dynamic ip adresses just ask and we`ll gladly help.

Cheers,

Sir. Lunchalot

Thanks

Thanks for replying to my mail. I've been trading by mail for over more than 5 years. I started with it in 1997 and stopped last year. In those 5 years i only met one guy who didn't send his tapes. But has you say most of the people now has got highspeed connection and are not willing to trade by post anymore. So i've to find new ways to get some great dj sets. Maybe you can help? I need some help with starting up an ftp site? Is it true that if you download from an T3 or T1 ftp/ftx site that you take over his speed?
Thanks a lot
Peace out
Bruno

First of all we need to know what connection you`re on. Since you`re trading via mail I assume you`re on 56k or below. Next thing we need to knowis the way you have to pay for your internet connection (not if you pay via credit card or anything... ). Do you pay for the time you`re on the internet or for your traffic or are you on a flatrate (meaning you only pay a certain amount each month and can stay on the net for as long as you want).

Now for the ftp/fxp. There is a difference between ftp`ing and fxp`ing. An ftp connection is between your pc and another pc. An fxp is a connection between two ftps where the two ftps can use their own maximal speed to transfer files between them, so basically fxp is not for downloading files to your computer but to spread files around the net. This leads us to one of your questions: You can`t download with t3 speed from a t3 if your connection is not a t3. You can only download with your max speed. The speed of the other side is only relevant if it is below your own speed. So basically if you`re downloading from a t3 with a 56k modem you can get a max of 56k.

How to set up an ftp:

An ftp is nothing else but some way to enable one computer to connect to another computer and exchange files. If you want to download from an ftp you must have an ftp browser (altough IE and Netscape can also do ftp it`s not really reliable and doesn`t work for some ftps.) I recommend getting flash fxp which is an excellent ftp browser that you also can do fxp if you need it sometime. Get it here!

Since you don`t only want to download from ftp sites but also to share your files ( ) and enable others to upload someting to you need to open your own ftp. Since you`re relatively new to ftp I recommend getting an easy to use one, like ServU. Get it here!

Simply follow the instructions and you`re almost ready to go! Next problem you have is that you probably don`t have a static ip adress but a dynamic ip. This means that your ip changes every time you log onto the net, so if you give your ftp info to someone (which then looks somthing like this: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx <- your ip, username:xxx, password:xxx) you have to update the information every time you log onto the net. Wouldn`t it be nicer if you could tell him one adress that always stays the same? Well, you can! There are free dynamic ip redirection services out there. You simply download a little programm that alway points to web name and redirects all connections to this name to your current ip.

Your ftp info then looks something like this: you.freeredirector.com, user:xxx, pass: xxx

There are a lot of these services out there. I personally use dns2go. get it here!

Now you`re ready to go! Set up the ftp, install the redirector and spread the word (don`t spam, but ask politely and don`t ask for something like: I want all PvD sets there are! But ask for specific things...).

But all good things have a downside too: If you`re on a 56k modem and you pay per time or volume (=upload+download) then an ftp is no use and you could also donwload them from the web, but if you have another combination, then an ftp is a must for you, altough it`s never to late for a broadband flatrate...

Hope this helps,

Sir. Lunchalot
