Does anyone know how to do this? I've looked in the manual and searched on google but I can't seem to get good info on this.

Basically my aim is to monitor my waldorf pulse with zero latency and also with vst fx like reverb etc.

My souncard is an ESI Juli@, which is Asio 2 compatible.

At the moment how I monitor is by unchecking 'direct monitoring' in the device panel but clicking the direct monitoring icon on an audio track (see pictures). This let's me hear fx etc. while I monitor. Should I be doing this?

Here are pictures of how I monitor and where I have got so far with setting up 'External Instruments' in the VST connections window.

Ignore the latency BTW, I was just trying something out.

I have all my external gear hooked up as External Instruments just like you have. Cubase adds audio tracks to the mixer for each, works just like any VSTi.

So are you hearing nothing at all, not hearing the effects, having problems exporting/recording it all, external instruments not playing in sync with VSTi's or what? I might be able to help if you make clearer what's the problem on your setup.

Oh, one thing springs to mind. You can't use the inputs in Cubase in any other way that are selected for the external instrument. You should NOT try to create audio track for it and record it normally. (Though this is something I'd like to be able to do..) The audio return will be shown only on the mixer, just like VSTi's, and you will only have your midi track for Pulse on the Project/Arrange window.

Well I set up the midi track, which plays the pulse no problem. I can record it fine as well. But my pulse doesn't play in sync with vsti's etc. because of latency.

I heard about setting up an external instrument, which would get rid of the latency problems. I have tried to set it up but there is no change to the latency, so I must have set it up incorrectly.

I'm not sure what you mean here mate?

Right, I get it now. Just like a VSTi doesn't need an audio track, neither should the external instrument. This isn't happening though, so getting that to work is probably the key. So how do I set that up?

THAT'S what I mean. If you're talking about recording audio here..? You shouldn't even be able to record it if it's set up properly.

Here are some things required to get it to work:

- You must remove the inputs that the Pulse is connected to from the VST Connections - Inputs (you can't use the inputs normally in Cubase after they are assigned for the External Instrument)

- You have to select the right inputs that Pulse is connected to on the VST Connections - External Instruments

- You will only see the audio returning from Pulse as audio channel on the mixer. You can not select it for audio track input and record it. Same way as VSTi's

But maybe you've already realised all this..?

I tried what you said but removing the inputs from 'vst connections-inputs' is removing the 'in' bus, therefore no sound comes in to cubase at all

Surely this isn't right?

I'm having the same latency problem, let me know if you fix it.

BTW, you tried clicking the 'direct monitoring' speaker icon on the audio track your trying to record?

It may seem odd but that's what you HAVE to do to get it to work. The physical input must be dedicated for the External Instrument and can not be used as normal input bus at the same time. That's the only way Cubase can compensate for the latency.

Ok so does this mean that you can't apply vst fx like reverb etc. while monotoring?

Yes, when everything's set up properly, you will see audio channel on the mixer labeled probably as..."Pulse" This is your Pulse audio return and Cubase adds this automatically. You can use any effects on this channel just like you would with VSTi's and everything will play in sync. You don't have to worry about the monitoring settings either.

Also remember, you can NOT record the audio from Pulse on audio track anymore. When you export the track, Cubase notifies that External Instruments are used and exports in real time recording your Pulse with all the effects and automations etc.
