Hello Fello TA's


Wow, it's been so long since I posted in here.

Anyways I already Dj Now I am finally in the stage or teaching myself/learning to produce something decent. I know noobs come on here and ask same damn questions I am sure you guys are tired of it.

So bare with me.

Basically I want to know where "i should start" get pointed in correct direction.

My Style is House,Progressive House,Techno,Trance

My Current setup is as follows

FruityLoops Studio 4
Cubase SX 3
Acid Pro 4

Pc System Specs
Windows Xp service pack 2 & Suse Linux 10.1
Intel Pentium (dual-core) 2.6GHZ overclocked to 3.8ghz
1-gig OCZ RAM
2 SATA's on RAID 1
ATI X1600Xt
BenQ 20.1 Widescreen Monitor
Logitech 5.1 Speakers
Logitech G15 Keyboard
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS

Music Producing Hardware
M-AUDIO/Midisport 1X1
Yahmaha DX100 (Digital Programmable Algorithim Synthesizer)

Dj Gear
(2) CDJ 800's
(1) DJM 600
(2) Numark TT 200's



Basically what elese do I need software/hardware wise in order to start making decent beats/songs.

Drum machine?
Any software you pros reccomend?
Any software with just drums samples & synthesizer samples you guys reccomend?


Any help would be greatful.... thanks in advanced.

Right now you don't need to get anything else. Start learning the production software you have it will take awhile. When you feel you need something else you will know what you need. But you can definitely learn production and bang out decent tracks with what you have. Just read read read and read some more and make a bunch of crappy tracks that is how everyone else got started.

Maybe it's just me but is fruity-loops a bad program? I find it farely easy to use to far. Im still stuck on alot of thing Ill have to figure it out. But it just seems like peopel on here hate it.

Dear god...don't tell me that you think Fruityloops is a bad program. Most people who don't like fruityloops do not understand what it's capable of. Yes... it does take some practice and lots of creativity/exploration, but if you stick it out, you can make a lot of good shit.

Well there seem to be some technical aspects on which fruity doesn't seem to work perfectly

To Topicstarter: But why work with fruity when *you* think it isn't working for you? I see you have Cubase 3 as well so why not just use that.

Just get some drum samples off the net and start working. There is a lot good stuff to be found online.

Yeah if you use Cubase you won't really need anything else ( and take that with a huge grain of salt because you will want more after awhile) But yeah with Cubase you can learn about production in general you know EQing tracks and mixing down and all that technical stuff you need to know before you can translate the sounds in your head onto the studio. But just keep at it it really takes year and years and years I've been doing it since 2003 and I suck terribly. But like I said you have everything you need and then a whole lot extra for a beginner. And yes Fruity is something I don't enjoy using but people who produce much better and I mean MUCH BETTER tracks than I do use Fruity so it can't be all that terrible.

Latest Mix

have a go at all production software to start with and see what you find the easiest to navigate around.

Get some samples - look at either the vengeance sound banks or there are loads online.

I would say at first don't focus on making a track but focus on layering up good sounds. Learn more on EQ and compression, sidechaining etc.

Once you feel you've got some good layers together then focus on making a full track

Too many people focus on getting a track finished that isn't going to go anywhere.

Listen to loads of tracks in your chosen genre, how they're layered and build etc, that should help

that's the way i've been doing it though I have been messing around with Reason 3 lately, my stuff from FL Studio 5 still sounds a lot better =/
