Puskas gets stadium named after him
Finally Hungary wakes up and names a stadium after Ferenc Puskas, the famous soccer player. About time i say.....
BCBUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) -- Hungary's largest sports stadium will be renamed after soccer legend Ferenc Puskas, a government official announced Tuesday, the star's 75th birthday.
Nepstadion -- Hungarian for "The People's Stadium" -- was renamed "Puskas Ferenc Stadion," government spokesman Gabor Borokai said.
Puskas was a forward on Hungary's "Golden Team" of the 1950s, which won a gold medal in the 1952 Olympics and lost the 1954 World Cup final to West Germany.
Nepstadion was built in 1953 and once housed 80,000 soccer fans for Hungary's historic 7-1 defeat of England in May 1954. Puskas scored two goals in that game.
The stadium is being renovated, with the work expected to be finished in 2004.
Hungary has bid to be the host of the 2005 World Athletics Championships and soccer's 2008 European Championships. The Ferenc Puskas Stadium would be the main venue for both events.
