ive noticed that when i put my hands behind my ears, sort of cup around them, i get much more clarity out of any track at lower volumes. around the vocal range. does that mean that my ears aren't large enough? or would this be common to everyone?

it certainly does, but does that mean that people with larger ears have a better perception of certain frequency ranges? i think that my undersided ears, for one, are giving me too much relative bass

thanks for your synth analogy, but im talking about boosting frequencies here, not filtering them through synthesis... clarity around vocal range; roughly 2-4 Khz? does that ring a bell? so cupping my hands around my freakin' ears is to understand whether differences in auricle anatomy create subtle differences in sound perception ... and not to better hear your wisecracking, capiche?

I'ts in your head. If you took out the kick, you could say everything else got louder, or you could say that you just removed the kick.
Another explanation is that maybe your cupped hands are resonating and thus boosting the frequencies around that range.
Ether way, your hands are still acting as filters.

right, if you want to just say filter and mean eq filter, without the connotation of cutting then fine. but the point is that there are dumbo ears out there that might be swanking around enjoying crisper sound, and i won't rest untill i findout, if it's true. bzzzzz.
I dunno but ages ago I was reading about doing it and if the frequencies appear to change then there's something up with your room acoustics.. Or something like that. When I do it, the highs are elevated.
