main riff and sub melodies

I just need to know when making a sub melody from your main riff,
do you guys usually program a totally new pattern for the sub melody ? to accompany the main riff ,or do you keep the same pattern and just edit the notes a bit.

I myself feel its more musical to do it the first way.

i either cut a 4 beat melody from the long arpeggio or be lazy and make some gated LFO pattern

more or less a combination of both just for track texture, but thats just me and probably everyone else as well

You don't need a different pattern on the sub melody if you make it harmonize with the main melody.
