The flappy, sort of distorted stab? (I assume you don't mean the melody).

A synth like the Nord Lead is a good start for this. There's a free clone called Synth1 I think, or a commercial one called Discovery 2.

Open up the filter all the way, then pull back just a touch. Add a little resonance. Play a low bass note. Nearly there, isn't it? Now add some distortion - try different kinds until you get the right one.

Now change the envelopes to get the time domain response you're after. Lemme know if this helps, might be able to explain in more detail.

You'll need to use a bandpass filter. Most synths can do this sound.

I like challenges I love to see if I can make sounds I hear in other songs.

Stay with me here, but for lack of a better term, are you referring to that low 'farting' type sound?

Heck, I might not need a synth to make that

edit: It looks like we posted at about the same time. It sounds like you did it! It sounds good! Not as good as my non-synth version, but it will do

Had a listen - you're close! Was the filter open all the way? Might be that the synth you're using just doesn't quite bite enough. My Virus is good for that but I remember getting good results out of the Discovery...
The track you're trying to mimic also has some very short, very harsh-sounding reverb on there...

My guess is that it is just a single sawtooth.
I also think about a lp filter with low resonance.

Ok, be easy on the composition. I'm just freehanding the same note over and over with no beat or anything

Here is what I came up with in Cakewalk Rapture real quick:

I discovered that it is a combination of both a BP and LP filter.

I had the BP filter set to a cutoff of 10500 Hz with a resonance of about 7 db. For the LP filter I had the resonance set to about 11 db. The varying sound was just done by modifying the LP filter up and down.

I also added a hard drive to the sound as well.

The waveform used was a sawtooth variant with 7 voices detuned 10 cents between them. So, this is, in essence, a supersaw.

Take care,
Adam
