hmmm, ok. apart from RTS, RPG, FPS (and im gonna chuck in sports games too). youre telling me apart from the biggest, most successful genres, we\'ve got nothing. yeah, ok.
firstly, you forget that almost all big big games are spread across platforms these days. and if theyre not, they at least get ported to the PC. most of the *really* successful games that i reckon were shit- came from consoles.
then we should forget that all these games run better, are more configurable & look better on the PC than they did on the consoles too. haha. then we'll forget that console games have been getting the 'dumbed down' treatment for many PC titles for a long long time.
the PC is the only platform currently pushing boundaries in gaming.
play whatever gets you going i always say, but dont be silly and say the PC is the most stagnant, when it is obviously the most versatile (ie sony & microsoft are more likely to release games on the PC than they are each other, if theyre not putting it across all platforms).

Saying that makes it seem like the PC market is nothing but creative, original gaming goodness, when in reality, there are only about 5-10 PC exclusive games actually worth talking about released per year. |
yes, but youre forgetting all the titles that are made as PC games first and foremost that get a port, and theyre always better on the PC.

Probably less than that, im being generous. Most of what we see invading PC game shelves are nothing but clones of past successful games. Not all, but most. |
you cant possibly distinguish PCs from consoles in this regard. thats just ridiculous. this is the state of gaming, and has been the state of gaming, for a fucking long time. just check crash of gaming for reasons why.
but, the PC is the platform that generally pushes the graphics, sound, physics etc boundaries- which is unfortunately 99% of whats improving in gaming these days.
and games like supreme commander
spore
company of heroes
crysis
whether they make it across platforms or not, theyre PC titles. and they are doing things that nobody has done before, from a *gameplay* perspective, which imo is far far more important. and these are just games that ive taken an interest in.
id be interested to know the last console game you consider to be really new, innovative or original. also, a rehash of previous titles? um, final fantasy #92 anyone?
but, as ive always said. play the platform(s) that has the most games you wanna play on it but, to be frank, in a *relative* sense, console games are for children.

the problem here is that you keep thinking im saying consoles are better than PC's.
ALL im saying is that the PC gets tons and tons of crap as well. your original post made it seem as if the PC is a creators haven for producing 100% original and quality games, which is not the case. |
yeah, of course. like i said, thats the state of gaming across all platforms, and has been for ages. crap crap crap.

i read the small synopsis for supreme commander. seems nothing more than an RTS with better graphics. |
oh dude. come on, if youre gonna bother arguing about something that you care about, you gotta at least do the research. thats the silliest thing youve said even if it ends up being a crap game, they are trying to do SO many things have have never been done before its just silly at the very least youve gotta check out the trailer

Crysis = same thing. nothing new, but rather the same thing we had before but with better graphics. maybe i should a little more on these games, but thats all im getting at from this. |
not as impressive, granted. but, given the nature of its gameplay (lush, island environment) their first use of real vegetation (as opposed to the graphical entities previously seen) adds an interesting element to gameplay in squad-based combat. FPS is the most tired genre of them all, and anything that they can do now to add to gameplay is a welcome addition. there are a few games (albeit very few) that can design environments so very good, that what they may lack elsewhere is a little less important, because of that new level of immersion.

i think ive heard of that game company of heroes. your link didnt work, but i think i recall it being a WWII game? i might be wrong.. |
link works for me yeah, ww2. with destructible buildings. that doesnt sound too impressive until you realise that the AI adjusts itself to shoot out of new openings, or move because not in cover anymore etc. from an RTS perspective, the gameplay freedoms and applications are obvious.

lets just settle and conclude this. BOTH consoles and PC's are full of shit. | ]
absolutely!

also, you mentioned before how the PC is the ONLY platform breaking boundaries. the only boundaries its breaking are graphics-related. when we hit that point in 15 years when graphics can only get slightly better, what will happen to the PC gaming market? With consoles, accessories like the Eyetoy and the Nintendo Wii will help keep it alive with its intuitiveness.... |
look, youll find a lot of people talking about how important gameplay is, but i guarantee you most wouldnt be able to define it. gameplay is about freedom to complete tasks by any method you choose, following the logical rules each game creates for itself. i just think so many console efforts restrict your freedoms in too many ways. was trying to get into "fable", a port, and it has less freedom than the old mega drive rpgs! or if i buy another console port that wants me to unlock various gameplay options im gonna go kill whomever invented the unlock. ffs!
yes, the pc is mostly pushing graphics boundaries, but like i already said, if thats the only improvements 99% of games are making, then ill take that too.
so, yeah, we agree. ultimately, i just wondered whether this game in particular deserved its own thread, because it doesnt seem remotely special. that is all. i hope its great and rocks your gaming world
i love it when the gaming forum becomes the PDD
