Question Archiving set of files to DVD-R with very long file names problem

Hi all. I'm having a problem backing up some large groups of files with very long names to the seven DVD-5s that's needed to back it up/archive them. The problem appears to be the length of the file names: they are too long for Nero, even after attempting to make a USF-only DVD. What do others here do about this issue? I want to keep the files on the DVDs then keep the SHA hashes for a later date when I get more HDD space to store them again. I was thinking of making a multi-part RAR of the directory of files, but as it's 29 GB (27 GiB), that's way too much space compared to what I now have left (around 5 GB on one of my drives). What's reccomended for this?

Thanks very much...

PS: I'm probably just going to wait till I get more space on my drive before doing it. When I get around to it, I'll probably do a multi-part RAR on the whole main directory & make the parts around 395.1 MiB (using the '395.1m' setting), to evenly fit 3951 MiB (3.8583 GiB; 4'142'923'776 bytes) onto seven 4.7-GB DVD-Rs. If anyone has any decent advice on burning the files to DVDs directly, without putting them into an archive file like ZIP/RAR/ACE/7z/TAR/etc, post here...

I hate this problem so hard. I also hate how my DVD burner ALWAYS gets the "Last Modified" date wrong, putting it back to 1857 or some shit.

What I plan on doing is just shortening all the file names to the 8.3 format, and dumping the original names to a text file with all the vital info such as filetype, size, last modified date, date created, etc.

Isn't there an automated way to do that?
If so that would be the bomb diggidy!

jdat, YES.... but they are obscure, because I can't find them. Googling has never helped me find an app that could do that for me, and if any came close... they were shareware.

So I'm going to have to program it myself. On the plus side, it will work exactly how I want it to.

I constantly run into folder depth and file name length issues ...

I can only imagine this is far from being a simple problem with administrators in large companies ... I wonder what they do

( I do realize that backing up to cd or dvd isn't exactly the norm for longevity and reliability issues in regards to both of these medias )

When I make the script, I'll post it/pm it to you. .

Trust me, I've ran into all of those problems and I am just as frustrated. My script will do it all when it's completed.

Thanks. Is Linux/UNIX required, though? I never used command line before...
