PATRONS at a popular inner-city nightclub were forced to dive for cover as men opened fire on its doors early this morning.
Four young women and two men were forced to dodge more than 30 bullets as they shattered the glass doors of Gas nightclub near Sydney’s Central railway station.
The Pitt Street office building which houses the nightclub also contains the Australian Customs Service and the NSW Department of Juvenile Justice.
A witness who declined to give his name said there were four gunmen all wearing balaclavas. Other witnesses said the men were armed with a shotgun, a rifle and a handgun.
The men sped from the scene in a blue-green sedan.
Minutes later, a Hyundai Lantra was found on fire in the Readers' Digest carpark in Surry Hills. The car is now being checked by police forensic officers. No guns have been found.
\"It was bang, bang, and then screaming. Girls in front of me were ducking the bullets,\" one patron told Macquarie Radio.
Police arrived at the club to find dozens of cartridges littering the road, shattered windows and bullet marks on the club wall.
More than 200 shocked nightclubbers were questioned for their accounts.
The Gas nightclub and adjoining Boheme Lounge were closed shortly after the incident at 2am.
There were no injuries, but an ambulance was called to assist a hysterical young man, crying his eyes out and dressed in what police describe as a faggy jacket with mirrors on it.
Police will review TV security footage in their hunt for clues.
