Rep. Katherine Harris (R-Fl.) says Separation of Church and State "A Lie"

At least she's being open and honest about her desire for American theocracy, unlike half of her party who wants the same. I wonder how much she helped Bush because God told her what ruler he wanted and she was doing his will during the recount?

That said, not the wisest statement when running in a state full of Jewish retirees.
quote:
Rep. Harris: Church-state separation 'a lie'
MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris told a religious journal that separation of church and state is "a lie" and God and the nation's founding fathers did not intend the country be "a nation of secular laws."

The Republican candidate for U.S. Senate also said that if Christians are not elected, politicians will "legislate sin," including abortion and gay marriage.

Harris made the comments -- which she clarified Saturday -- in the Florida Baptist Witness, the weekly journal of the Florida Baptist State Convention, which interviewed political candidates and asked them about religion and their positions on issues.

Separation of church and state is "a lie we have been told," Harris said in the interview, published Thursday, saying separating religion and politics is "wrong because God is the one who chooses our rulers."

Electing non-Christians a 'legislative sin'
"If you're not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin," Harris said.

Her comments drew criticism, including some from fellow Republicans who called them offensive and not representative of the party.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Florida, who is Jewish, told the Orlando Sentinel that she was "disgusted" by the comments.

Harris' campaign released a statement Saturday saying she had been "speaking to a Christian audience, addressing a common misperception that people of faith should not be actively involved in government."

The comments reflected "her deep grounding in Judeo-Christian values," the statement said, adding that Harris had previously supported pro-Israel legislation and legislation recognizing the Holocaust.

Harris' opponents in the GOP primary also gave interviews to the Florida Baptist Witness but made more general statements on their faith.

Harris, 49, faced widespread criticism for her role overseeing the 2000 presidential recount as Florida's secretary of state.

State GOP leaders -- including Gov. Jeb Bush -- don't think she can win against Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson in November. Fundraising has lagged, frustrated campaign workers have defected in droves and the issues have been overshadowed by news of her dealings with a corrupt defense contractor who gave her $32,000 in illegal campaign contributions.

Theres alot more just like her.

a snip from-- http://www.shelleytherepublican.com/2006/08/

"President’s authority comes from God, and that as a Christian nation we are required to trust that our Christian leader has prayed and meditated on the pressing issues of the day. He has taken advice from Pat Robertson, James Dobson and other leading Christians, and he is dong God’s will.

God’s law takes priority over the constitution and the statutes which are merely laws of man. The president is not “above the law”, more that he must follow his Christian faith. He must answer to a higher law than the constitution: The law of the bible."

Why is America sooo religious?! I just don't get it! It's one of the most advanced modern states in the world, yet half the population (probably a lot more!) are no different to the most religious populations of the Middle East and elsewhere. The American regime, in terms of religious intensity, is identical to those in Iran or the Taliban in Afghanistan!

Maybe instead of a seperation of church and state they should just have a seperation of state! One half can take in all the fundamentalists and the other half (quarter?!) can take in all the enlightened ones! Then they whacko half can impose all the oppressive religious Sharia-style laws on their population as they chose...

The fundies in Alabama/Texas/Mississippi/etc. aren't the ones advancing the modern state. They're just reaping the benefits.

Is the US still influenced by that North/South division that caused the Secession war?

Worse.

It's North VS South, Coasts VS Center.

Haha, yeah good one missus. Apparently she's never read anything by Jefferson or Madison:

quote:
I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between church and State.

http://www.infidels.org/library/his...omas_jefferson/

quote:
We, the subscribers, citizens of the said Commonwealth, having taken into serious consideration, a Bill printed by order of the last Session of General Assembly, entitled "A Bill establishing a provision for teachers of the Christian Religion," and conceiving that the same, if finally armed with the sanctions of a law, will be a dangerous abuse of power, are bound as faithful members of a free State, to remonstrate against it, and to declare the reasons by which we are determined.

This is just... scary. How can you be a representative of one of the oldest democracies in the world and still say shit like this? Furthermore, how do people like this manage to get elected in the first place?

I should send her this book written by 2 Cornell professors, one that I had for 2 classes and one that I didn't have, so she can get an aide to read it and summarize, hopefully correcting her of her stupidity.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/03...7169664?ie=UTF8

Amazon's got the first 4 pages of chapter 1 to preview if anyone's interested in the ideas brought forth.
