The reason for the different versions are license problems.
Especially with bigger names it is mostly so that the track gets released from different record labels in different countries. So the rights for a track are with different record labels. If you wanna release now on a world wide compilation you get there some problems.
For example I wanna release a compilation in Germany / Europe and wanna have a track from Paul van Dyk. I go to Vandit and ask permission to use the track on my compilation. They say okay.
If I wanna release the same compilation now also in the USA or Asia I get the problems as the rights for the same Paul van Dyk track in the USA is e.g. not with Vandit it is with the record label XX as Vandit licensed the track to them for a US release.
The US record label plans e.g. to use it exclusive on a own compilation. If Blank & Jones come now with their compilation and wanna release it in the USA, they can't as they have no permission for this in the USA as they first have to get the permission from the US label aswell. As this is way to much paperwork and sometimes you also don't get the license in one contry, they made it so that they made one time the compilation for the german, austria, switzerland marked where they have the permission for all songs. (2 CD Version / 3 CD Version (Limited Edition)). Then they made one version for the international marked with only songs they got the world wide rights for. (1 CD Version).
This was in the past more often so. Nowdays you see that you only take songs on your CD where you get the world wide rights for as in the end this is much less work. Expect you wanna release the CD only in one country.
