Basic Cleaning Issues.. stylus/records.

k so ive heard of brushes and stuff to clean records, but what is it when you have that problem with the 'muffled' bass?
its like a BOOM that sounds like its going to skip but doesnt, muffled and stuff, i have that one some of my records but it won't quite skip, just a really nasty kinda kick drum that sounds like it will. just dirt?
i tried johnny's idea, with the tonic water, which seems to help for general cleaning but it hasn't fixed that problem.. now my whole record sounds a lil' muffled or something, which didnt have the problem before, i think. not sure.

can i just use like soap and water and a sponge?? for those annoying muffled almost skipp-y parts.

also, i get a hell of a lot of fluff sticking to my stylus, im always trying to blow or pick it off, what's the best way to go about keeping your styli clean? i should probably stop using my grubby fingers eh..

is that maybe my problem, dirty styli, rather than dirty records.. (i think i have both haha)

but it really bothers when recording
