Being a fellow Singaporean myself, I have read in mags that some Singaporeans have made it out in the UK. As for Aldrin, I guess some luck at the right place and right time plays an important role. Being a resident at Zouk ( a world famous club based on the invitation of big name DJs like Oakenfold, Fatboy Slim, Paul van Dyk...blah blah blah), increases your exposure to contacts and hardwork do pay off....but to earn a living in Singapore through DJing is madness, I've heard that local DJs get paid between CAD $ 50 - $ 200 / night or session.
Plus the market is in Singapore for dance music is so damn small...therefore the inability to reap some dough for local DJs.
Not to mention the type of classifications that Singaporeans enjoy...like Trance is for middle-class citizens (those who speak more Chinese/Dialect than English) and those who assume themselves as an English-Speaking group disses trance off like nobody's business....so trance is pretty contained to clubs outside of Zouk's realms...
One more interesting fact: Paul Van Dyk was told by the Zouk Management that they would prefer him to play "HOUSE" that night....Man, to tell a German "Lord of Trance" DJ to play house music is just pathetic...they could have gotten Groove Armanda or Basement Jaxx to come....Anyways, Paul Van Dyk ignored the request and play a full-fletched Trance set...The ZOuk Management must be pissed to the bones...
Zouk is an amazing club, no doubt, which is segregated in 3 portions:
Phuture, Main Floor, Velvet Underground. Phuture is usually flooded by younger clubbers who are more into Funky, Nu-Skool/Old Skool Breaks. Main Floor is usually filled up when there's a guest DJ...once a week I guess.....Velvet Underground....Jazzy, do-not-know-how-to-classify kinda music...not too high bpms....mainly house...is flooded with Yuppies...rich bastards who have lots of money to spend..lol...
Anyways, that was my playground since I was 13 years old...with my fake IDs and shit...it's been more than 10 years now....and I still frequent the club whenever I go back....it's just a pity Trance is so unwelcomed in Zouk and overclassifed in Singapore...it's a pretty fake scene if I must admit it...as Trance is definately the number 1 requested genre in all private/home parties.
I am defintately gonna check that CD out...sorry for this long passage..just woke up and felt that sudden surge to write...lol
