Stu Cox - "Until Midnight"... Warm-up trance demo

Hey folks, been a couple of months since my last demo... hadn't done a warm-up style one for a couple of years so thought I'd get one together.

Although it's designed for a kind of warm-up/relaxed feel, I can promise you that in no way means it's boring

It's not as technical as my mixes usually are in terms of any tricks etc, although there are a couple of loops added, a few subtle uses of filters and the mixing's pretty varied.

And I know the tracklist may look a bit odd for a warm-up set, but every track's been selected to work well in the way it's used, where it's placed and the speed it's played, so have faith

All comments, of course, are very welcome

Tracklist:
01 Hybrid - Visible Noise
+ Bahamut - Hyasynth
02 Steve May - Sublimate [Breaks Mix]
03 Peter Jurgens - The Noise
04 Johan Gielen - Physical Overdrive [Akatishia Remix]
05 Apogee - Tribal Affair
06 Way Out West - Intensify Part 1
07 Fred Numf - Someskunkphunk
+ Tristan vs Graham Gold - Silver & Gold [Main Mix] (loop)
08 Hybrid - Theme From Wide Angle
09 Mike Foyle - Northern Lights [Alucard Remix]
10 Aimar - Still Waters [Acute Remix]
11 Bobina - Trance For Cowboys
12 Audion Project - All Fools' Day [Bangin' Mix]
+ Polarstate - Global Midnight [Morphogenic Resonance Remix] (loop)
13 Brisky - Now & Forever
14 Chicane - Lost You Somewhere [Isoterra Remix]

Stu this is some ace work here m8 - I'll have another listen before a proper review, but honestly, it's inspiring to listen to...

I've been in such a rut the last few days with different producers pulling me in all sorts of directions from tech house to prog trance - And having dealt with those frustrations lately, I can tell you the one thing you capture in this set better than anything else is flow. It's something I think I'm even more sensitive to right now having not been able to find myself, and honestly this just feels like it's got direction and focus. Add solid mixing and some interesting personal touches and you've got something really special here kid.

Well done m8!

brilliant set mate, gave it a couple of whirls today and liked it very much. i think it was at some point you broke the flow a bit, can't remember exactly but it was nothing minor. that fred numf track was rocking and so was intensify, god i forgot about that one. cheers

Had a listen on the way into work this morning.

Nice stuff, the only 2 niggles I have are merely down to personal preference, the first being the chunkiness of the first batch of tunes, it's just not my bag prog-wise, and the second was the transition out of Theme From Wide Angle, I like the outro bit to be faded out gradually.

Really enjoyed the last few tracks though

I also did get some odd clicking/popping noise on the 2nd or 3rd track in only one ear, not sure if it was the mp3 or my phone, but the rest of the mix was fine

Nice one squire

Hi Stu
I took a listen to the set, and I liked it but wasn't impressed that much. I think this set is average compared to the other stuff I have heard from you. I guess I prefer your "Technical Mixes", they seem more fun and interesting for me.

Anyways thanks for sharing this, I'll look to hear your next set.

Cheers for the comments guys.

Palm: Cheers dude, re. sound quality - I haven't mastered it like I normally do (just getting lazy I'm afraid!) but I didn't think it sounded that bad?

Montana: Glad you like, where did you think it lost the flow? There was a point intended to kinda be a bit of a "breaker" - around the 29m30s mark, where it kinda moves from prog into trancier stuff... maybe that didn't work as well as I thought? or was it somewhere else?

Kr00t0n: Yeah personally I really like dark, solid prog - particularly as I walk into a club, hence me using it here. I appreciate it's not everyone's cup of tea and a lot of people prefer lighter sounding stuff, but I find it harder to start dancing to melodic prog at the start of the night... nothing like a nice dirty beat to get you into a groove

I think in one of the tracks early on there was a scratch on the CD I used which made a bit of a clicking sound but luckily didn't skip so I expect that's what you heard? Sorry about that - I'll identify the culprit and (re)BURN IT!!

Pinokio: This wasn't really intended to compare or compete with any of my other mixes - it was just something I thought I'd have a bash at... a demo to create the right feel and atmosphere for a club warm-up set, which of course loads of technical stuff wouldn't really be very suitable for. So I understand if it wouldn't be your favourite thing to listen to at home, just sharing this for feedback And yeah, I'll have a couple of new trance/tech mixes coming quite soon hopefully

i relistened to the demo a couple of times now and i think i understood what you were trying to do now. but it's more of a personal thing

A very very safe set not differing from 99% of the other supermarket trance mixes on the market. You work much better when you extend outside your comfort zone mate.

Thanks for commenting, I'm suprised to hear you say that tbh.

This set isn't designed to stand out as "best set ever", or make people think "OMG gotta see this guy play" and it's definately not a change in direction from what I normally do in my peak-time sets, it's simply designed to represent a warm up "done properly" - i.e. NOT trying to steal the limelight from the next DJ but trying to build up the crowd smoothly so that they're ready to rock when the first headliner does... there isn't much technical or risky stuff in there cos no one wants to walk into a club to find the DJ showing off to an empty dancefloor.

But still I woulnd't have said it was particularly standard as a trance mix, there are loads of tracks in there I've never heard anyone else play out or seen on another tracklist and I think the mixing's still a fair bit more varied than most DJs.... what made you think of it like that? Any tracks in particular?

Really appreciate any comments here cos getting a feel for what people do/don't like to hear in a warm up set is something I really want to keep improving as much as I can.

I take your point mate. As you have explained it that way it makes perfect sense to me as a warm up.

Cheers for that !
