Re: Some questions about DJing
| quote: | Originally posted by Andryuha
Well, I've been into the electronica scene (primarily trance) for years now. And now I decided to start DJing myself. For now I'm forced to work with software (Ableton, Traktor), but soon I'll get a mixer and a set of turntables. I got some questions:
1) What kind of turntables should I get?
-Vinyl or CDJ?
-a decend beginner brand and model?
2) What are some good sources for vinyls?
3) What's a good mixer that could be used with PC as well as turntables?
4) How do you promote your work?
5) Is it OK if I just mix? I really suck at producing (for now at least)
6) Any other useful tips?
thanks in advance! |
1. Depends, do you want the feel and shit of vinyl and have a lot of cash? Vinyl. If you don't really care about the feel and don't have too much cash, CDs.
Brand: Pioneer/Techs are the indusry standard however don't feel that you need to get the top line if your starting out, you can get a mid-range and upgrade later. See other threads for suggestions
2. HTFR, 4DJsonly, Chemical, Juno... See Sticky for more. (http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...&threadid=65343)
4. Since your starting out, forums, download sites and so on.
5. Yup there are no rules to djing.
6. Keep trying and don't give up, pratice makes perfect.

1) What kind of turntables should I get?
I know nothing about vinyl, never used it. Re CDJ's you can't go wrong with Pioneer. 800's are superb, 1000's are the top of the range & are in nearly all clubs around for good reason. Lastly, some prefer the cheaper option of the 200's. It might be worth checking out the Denon range although I've not used them myself.
2) What are some good sources for vinyls?
Dunno as I don't buy them. I guess Juno, HTFR, Chemical Records etc. For digital there's Beatport, Audiojelly, Trackitdown etc etc etc.
3) What's a good mixer that could be used with PC as well as turntables?
I'm afraid I don't use Ableton so I'm unsure of the technicalities of controlling your PC via your mixer. Have you had a look at the Ableton site? Might be something there on that one
4) How do you promote your work?
Friends & internet. Click on my sig for an example I guess also on flyers etc if you play out.
5) Is it OK if I just mix? I really suck at producing (for now at least)
Dude, there's no law that says all DJ's must also be great producers!
6) Any other useful tips?
Enjoy yourself man, make mistakes, learn from them, mess about & find some neat new tricks Above all practice, it takes time but it can be very rewarding when it finally starts to click into place Good luck

thanks for all the replies! I have been messing around with ableton and traktor for a while. However, it is extremely hard to mix with just a mouse alone. I don't have much cash, but I think I'll get a mixer first and use it in conjunction with my PC. So, can any mixer be used with ableton?

Re: Re: Some questions about DJing
You could also buy used 1200's, and something like the new m-audio torq application to play digital files using timecoded vinyl.
If you can learn to beatmatch and mix well using that, using cdj's will be no problem.
Definately don't eliminate digital altogether.
