Hi!
is it bad for your turntablemotor, if you touch the platter to slow down or speed up a record?
and is there any difference between belt- and directdrive turntables in this case? (i mean like for the direct it is bad, but for the belt it isn't)

Well, I doubt if it can seriously damage the engine.
Though I wouldnt reccomend you use it to slow the record as a habit.
In due time things can get messed up.
Best thing is to touch to record...

I think it should generally be okay for direct drive motors, as the power supply comes directly from the soruce it shouldn't deteriorate the performance. Belt driven ones, though I'm not sure, I think it would wear down the belt a bit.

Just look at the dots on the platter. If they speed up or slow down when you touch the platter it means that you don't know how to handle vinyl. Learn quickly cause you're hurting the motor.

Where did you get this crap from? Did you just make that up?

Touching the platter on direct drive decks will NOT hurt the motor. It won't hurt the motor on belt driven decks, either, for that matter. With belt driven decks however, you do have to be careful, because every time you slow down/stop the platter you are making the belt stretch. The more the belt gets stretched, the less power gets transferred so the less torque you have. I don't mean to say the platter will spin slower, because it won't, but it won't have as much torque.

But with direct drive decks, you are completely safe. You can stop it and spin it backwards if you want, all that happens is that you put a load of effort into repelling a magnetic field.

I never touch the vinyl when I need to adjust the pitch during a transition. I generally touch the platter, otherwise I turn the centre spindle if only a very small adjustment is needed. Sometimes the best thing to do is to simply move the pitch-slider, depends on the situation.

Think about it logically... the pressure you put on the motor, the more stress it will be under. Surely you don't think the platter turns itself?

Wouldn't it be bad for platter-touchers? I think even big-name DJs do that sometimes..

DJTJ is right. I touch the platter all the time, still works 100%.
why? because the motor is electromagnetic. Nothing is in direct contact, as opposed to gears and stuff, so nothing can be physically worn out if you touch the platter.

touching the platter is 100% safe on my technics. it does NOT hurt the motor.

yup..anybody who has a DD TT should know this. Cmon, you put it together, you put the platter on, felt the big assed heavy magnet. Then you power it up, the magnetic forces make the platter move. You will not damage ANYTING on you DD TT if you touch the platter.


On Belt Drive, you MAY do some MINOR harm.. but really who has belt drive?

i always do it to cue the record up..
holding the vinyl can sometimes skip the stylus if you're not careful

Hell, yeah. I screw up perfectly-cued up tracks sometimes because of this.
