Right then,

I am just about to embark on my new setup, and originally I'd had planned 2xCD1000s and 1xXone:92.

Do I really need it? Well, my thoughts are that it is a home setup, so I really don't need to go overboard. I already know I can mix, I've previously owned several differeent vinyl spinning setups, so I want to get some decent stuff.

It's an £800 saving to go for the 800s and the 62.

So ultimately my question is, what do you guys feel are the main advantages the 1000 and the 92 have respectively over the 800 and 62. Can the 800 loop like the 1000? And I know the 92 has midi control, but if I want to incorporate, say Ableton which is very appealing to me, I'd be able to make a future upgrade of a midi controller and be no worse off?

The pitch sensitivty on the 1000 compared to the 800 - is there any difference.

And all other differences that are noteable. I mean I've even heard someone say that they prefer using the 62s faders over the 92s - why would that be?

I mean I'd love the higher end products, but for a saving of £800 then I really do have to consider wether this option would be a better fit for me......

For a home setup, honestly, the 800s and a 62 would be more than enough. Someone else will be able to help you out specifically on the mixer differences, but I can definitely say that you shouldn't worry about the .02 vs the .05 pitch increment on the 1000 and the 800, respectively. Like, for real, it's barely noticeable. If I had to choose, I'd upgrade the mixer to the 92 before upgrading the 800 to the 1000.

i haven't used either, but from what i understand the xone:92 has a lot better cueing options than the 62. i know that's what i'll get if i ever get a new mixer, because no other new mixer has the kind of cueing options i'd like.

and on the cdjs, the 1000s offer hot cues and cue point saving to sd cards at least and better pitch resolution and are a hell of a lot sexier than the 800s.


edit: and you can get the xone:92 as rotary too, which is definitely teh win.

I've been doing a lot of research in the meantime, and I've found a very good comparison piece on the 800 and 1000. Only problem is it's old and covers the 800mk1 and 1000mk2.

In it it mentions that the 800mk1 is only capable of holding 1 cue per CD despite being able to remember 500 cue points, meaning that if you have say 8 tracks on the CD you can only have a cue point memorized for 1 track. Has this been improved for the Mk2 version to allow all tracks on 1 CD to have a cue point?

Looping and storing of loop info on this model is of major interest to me. As above, are you able to save loop info for outros etc for several tracks on a CD? Or do you need to do it live, on the fly so to speak?

I'm not understanding the difference between hot cue and just plain old cue. Can you explain - sorry to be a noob on this.

Also, comeing from a basic setup previously (2x 1210s and a VMX300) I've never been exposed to anything extravagent in the way of cueing options. I mean, split cue (meaning 1 track oneside of the cans and the other track the other - am I right) or just plain monitoring the chosen track. I can't see how it can get more complex than that - could you elaborate a little please?

yeah, i wouldn't pay much for sexier gear either. and i have no idea what the hot cues are really for, it's just that people usually mention them as an advantage that the cdj1000 has. and on the xone:92 you have one crucial button IMO and that is the pre/post button on the cueing system, which lets you select between pre and post eq on cueing. i personally like not to hear the eq changes on the phones when cueing, that's why i got a vestax pcv-175 for myself even though it's ugly as fuck and old too.

I'll go and find out what hot cues are. Just a point on that pre and post. As I understand it you're able to do a hardware mod quite easily (with the advice of the A&H experts) to get the desired pre or post eq. Of course this means you're not able to do it live, but it is an answer of sorts. I'd like to give the post eq thing a go myslef too, sounds like it might be advantageous.

Anyone else have info on wether you can mod a 62 to have either pre or post eq? I think I read it here somewhere.......

I can't help on the Allen & Heath part as unfortunately I've not had the pleasure to try one out.

Here's my take on CDJ800 vs CDJ1000. I bought CDJ800's as I'd never mixed before & couldn't justify the extra $$$ on the CDJ1000's. Since then I've often thought about selling mine & switching but I just can't justify it!

Yep, the CDJ800 stores 1 cue point per CD. How do you intend to store your tracks? Many will burn 10 tracks to CD then duplicate it. Personally I put 1 track per CD. It's hard enough remembering a track name with faceless CD-Rs so it must be nearly impossible finding any particular track from 10 hidden in a bunch of CD-Rs! I get along fine with 1 cue point per CD. These days I rarely bother storing the cue point to the units memory at all.

Hot cues basically let you jump between up to 3 preset cue points. Great if you play house. Not so great for trance so personally I have no great use for it. Of course that may change if I ever get chance to have a proper play & experiment with them

The pitch increments on the CDJ800 are 0.05%. There is an option on the CDJ1000 to make this 0.02%. This is the one thing I'd love on the CDJ800 & the main reason I consider switching. Having said that, 0.05% is absolutely great & perfectly useable.

There's a few other differences between them like cue return is only on the CDJ800 (so I believe), the CDJ800 has the beat cutter, CDJ1000 has loop in & loop out adjust (only loop out adjust on CDJ800) etc.

The one thing I don't like on the CDJ1000 is that you have to press start to play a track. On the CDJ800 you can start the track by releasing the platter. I like to do it that way as I've had situations where I haven't pressed play properly & the button has registered 2 hits - ie it starts then instantly stops. Using the platter eliminates this. To do it my way on the CDJ1000 you have to hold the platter then press start then release the platter when the time comes to drop the track in. Just personal preference

I have to say I think it's a bit of a shortfall to have just one cue point per CD. I appreciate what you're saying regards faceless CDRs etc, but I reckon I'll remember stuff. Effectively if I cut one track per CDR then I'll be wasting about 60minutes of each CD. And have 7 or 8 times more CDs than if I were to fill up a CD. Or have I totally not grasped what you meant?!

Have you got the MK2 or the MK1? And if you have the MK1 do you know if it's different on the MK2?

For mixer go with the Xone 92. The Xone 62 is just a plain mixer with nothing special, except it has great sound quality. The xone 92 offers many filters and more hands on controls. Cueing is better on the Xone 92.

For the CDJs, I own the CDJ800's and I love them. Honestly, I never use all the extra features of the CDJ1000. The main difference between the two was the platter. The platter on the CDJ800MK1 is loose and it takes some getting used to, but they fixed on the CDJ800MK2 to match the platter on the CDJ1000. If they did, I would go with the CDJ800 over the 1000 for the instant loops and platter release. Even though, I heard they took out the platter release on the CDJ800 MK2. I havent mixed on them yet, but I cant wait.

The cuing system on the :62 is just a good as any other mixer i have ever used. If you look into it and read up on the aux cuing method, you'll see you have a very flexible cueing system. With the option of pre and post eq.

As for filters, the :62 has the same options as a 92, just not independant. For eg, where on a 92 you can have hpf on one channel, and lpf on the other. The :62 only allows use of one filter at a time. Not a huge problem.


Short answer. Get the 62.

Long answer. the 62 is half the price of a 92 in Australia. for the price of a 92 you could buy a 62, a pair of hd25 headphones and an efx 500 + have cash left over. I know what i'd choose
