Description:

This is my laid back, slothy mix. It has a good deal of progressive house, but this mix is pretty different than most progy sets. There are the well known classics as well as a few obscure and unreleased tunes in this selection. The last tune with the hilarious Goerge Bush samples could never be released due to lack of clearence from the president, unfortunately. I chose to include it unmixed because it didn't quite fit in the set, but it is a great song.

Spooky - Sustain ====> Bjork - An Echo, A Stain (Luke Chable & Chris Gainer Remix)

First transition here is a nice beatless one. errors on these kinda mixes of course are hard to pick up on...the fade of an echo, a stain in sounds pretty good.

Bjork - An Echo, A Stain (Luke Chable & Chris Gainer Remix) ====> Deepsky - Metro

nice beatmatch on this next transition. i noticed that kick stab when you realized it wasn't time to drop the next track in, but you fixed it quickly. the tracks flow into each other well.

Deepsky - Metro ====> Starecase - Vapour Trails

another good beatmatch. there is a little change in feel here, but nothing drastic, which i feel like i want. if i have any thought at the moment as to the set it's that i'm waiting for something to happen, but nothing is starting to get going. might just be a taste thing here, but i feel like this is just a bunch of great tunes that are mixed together...Vapour Trails is starting to pick it up a bit, but so far all the tunes have the same feel and it feels a bit stagnet. There is a slight increase in energy so far, but a rise in energy isn't the only important thing in a great set.

Starecase - Vapour Trails ====> James Holden- I Have Put Out The Light

I think part of the thing that seems to be dragging down the set up to this point in my mind besides all of the tracks being similar, is that you are mixing the very end of the tracks. on a technical note, all the mixes have sounded good, but you lose a lot of what you're building when you mix all the way out to the end of the tracks. just became really evident on this transition into I Have Put Out The Light.

James Holden - I Have Put Out The Light ====> BT - Fibonacci Sequence

i really liked this transition. i like what you did with I Have Put Out The Light vocals before you kicked BT completely in..sounded great. it's hard hearing the tune pitched down after you're used to hearing it a certain way. This was the change in sound i had been waiting for, but for me personally the slowed down version kept things from picking up.

BT - Fibonacci Sequence ====> Stephan Anion - Orion's Belt

similar thing happened with this track. this sounds like a track that isn't meant to be played this slow, just like the BT track. it's ok to pick up BPM over the course of a set especially when the tunes you're going to play are supposed to be played faster. i heard a little stumble on the beatmatch very briefly during the beginning of this transition, but you fixed it well.

Stephan Anion - Orion's Belt ====> Kosmas Epsilon & Stel vs Funk D'Void - Innocent Thoughts / All That Matters (Sasha's Fundacion Mashup)

mix was a little off again on this one, but still pretty good.

Kosmas Epsilon & Stel vs Funk D'Void - Innocent Thoughts / All That Matters (Sasha's Fundacion Mashup) ====> Radiohead - Idioteque (DJ Shadow Mix)

Technically pretty good on this one. They flow together well.

Radiohead - Idioteque (DJ Shadow Mix) ====> Radiohead - The Gloaming (Unreleased DJ Shadow Remix)

Overall, I think that you picked a bunch of great tunes, but the style in which you mixed them didn't really work for me. The biggest thing I noticed from Fibonacci Sequence on was how pitched down things were, and although i know you were trying to go for a dreamy sorta feel to your mix...i think it would've been a lot better acheived if you had picked tracks that were actually more in the BPM you were going for. Slowing down those tracks just seemed to make it very monotonous and hard to finish listening to.

Like I said you seemed pretty good technically through out. I personally found all of the tracks great individually, but when trying to cohesively mix them all into this mix, I thought the style was once again pretty monotonous and i kept waiting for something to happen...some kind of change in tone or something to peak my interest and keep me listening.

"Great review"
Seriously though could you give me a review when I come out with my mix. Don't toot my horn either. Also give me a number that I can work with. For example what would give it on a scale of 1 to 10 if that's possible.

By the way sleepy knows how I feel about this set.

Thanks for the detailed review, I do apreciate your opinion. As far as the slow tempo, some people aren't for it, but I think it gives the listener more time/space to pay attention to detail. Also I loved these tracks so much that I didn't mind hearing them drawn out and taking awhile to build. But I can see how that would bore some. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Thanks for listening.

hey man, sorry for commenting so late, been stuck at work/school .. finally listened to your mix this morning. Good stuff!
you slowed it down for that special "chill" effect... but it didnt work for me. The tracks that I haven't heard sounded good, the tracks that I have heard before and I was used to listen to them in normal speed sounded not too good.. I had to skip Fibonacci Sequence, coz it was too painfull for my ears.

I really liked the very first beatless transition, very nice intro to the mix.. and then that great remix of Bjork, amazing track.. Sounds very good slowed down. Didn't really like the next few transitions, like the second and third.. I dont think the tracks go well together. The transition to Fibonacci Sequence was very cool...The vocals "I have put out the light" and then Fibonacci drops fully - that combo sounded awesome. I wish the whole thing was faster tho... =) The next transition sounded a little "Off" at first..but then the melody from BT's track created a very cool effect along with the bassline from Orion's Belt..so overall it was very good. Great track by the way, I still can't decide if it sounds good in normal speed, or slow-mo..hehe. The next transition sounds very good, beatmatched well and the tracks go very well together, but the incoming track is a little louder, imo.
The next one sounds seemless, perfectly matched tracks, imo.

Radiohead mixes in and brings a few memories from the past..hehe..great track. Used to listen to it a few years ago on repeat all the time. Dont like The Gloaming too much tho..

this is a great "Live Set" overall, but yet not very dancy.. great to listen to in headphones while relaxing. I wouldn't listen to it twice though, but its just me - My fav BPM is 126 hehe...

This is the second "chill-out" set of yours that I've heard.. Is that your main style? Do you have anything more energetic coming, breaks preferably?

Yes. I am supposed to do a guest mix for lunar-entertainment.com by mid april, so keep on the lookout. Its going to be two hours, and I plan on having the first 30 minutes ambient, the next 30 chill out prog & breaks, and the last hour will hard hitting breaks. Keep on the lookout, this mix will be nice, I promise.
