Well here I go.... and in advance thank you for all this board has helped me with already.....

When I look at my records sometimes I get the 45 or 33 printed right on.... but other times not a thing..... sometimes I here the song at 33 and think that is nice and slow then I play it at 45 and I think that is nice a fast....Is there a standard at what speed things should be played.... like one track on one side = 45 and 2 or more tracks on one side = 33....? Or should I just be content with any way I like to hear it?

if you have your pitch at 0, you should usually be able to tell if its a 33rpm or 45rpm record...

the 45 for one song, 33 for 2 or more doesn't hold up.. i have a bunch of single song sided tracks and they are a good mix of 33 and 45 rpm... I also have some sides with 2 songs that are 45rpm..

Yeah, it really does depend on how it has been pressed. You should always be able to tell by listening to it what speed it should be at.

Like quddha says, some records surprise you: I have one record that has two 45 tracks on one side, these are both about 8 or 9 minutes long. You wouldn't ordinarily think that you can get that much on one side of vinyl, but if you press it really quietly then you can fit more on.

Other times, you get records that are really loud, and have one 33 track on each side. It all depends on who pressed it and what sort of a mood he was in at the time!

Ah! No wonder that vinyl's so quiet.. never thought about that!

does anybody else find it odd that extravaganze records all say 33 1/3 on it, even tho the A side plays @ 45?

Why didn't the guys just settle on a standard and say amongst themselves "Okay, from now on everything's going to be pressed at 33". Sure will makes things much easier, won't it? DJs won't have to meddle with the 33 or 45 buttons on their TTs anymore..

Records pressed at 45 rpm actually have a better sound quality than those at 33. Think about it like this:

The record spins, but if you play it at 45 the the needle actually travels a lot further than if it spins at 33 rpm. Therefore, you are sqeezing more music into the same space when a record is a 33 than if it was a 45. The quality of the sound will depend more on the source and the quality of the equipment used to press it, but there is a small difference here. It's not really noticable though.

This is true.
This said however I wonder why they don't press 78 rpm records anymore (oldskool!). Maybe they skipped too easily?
