Yeah, it really does depend on how it has been pressed. You should always be able to tell by listening to it what speed it should be at.
Like quddha says, some records surprise you: I have one record that has two 45 tracks on one side, these are both about 8 or 9 minutes long. You wouldn't ordinarily think that you can get that much on one side of vinyl, but if you press it really quietly then you can fit more on.
Other times, you get records that are really loud, and have one 33 track on each side. It all depends on who pressed it and what sort of a mood he was in at the time!
