I mean that it's true that the smaller the room is, the smaller monitors you can get away with and still have decent results. But there's a limit to that. Even in the smallest room (i.e. a closet) you still need monitors that are able to move substantial air to create lower frequencies decently. This is true theoretically (due to the wave lengths etc.), but it's also my experience in "real life". And imho the bass port in the 8040 really is the minimum you should chose to be able to reproduce bass frequencies accurately.
My point again: If you can't afford the 8040s (or even better the 8050s), your money's better spend on another brand, where you get a larger bass port. Remember that Genelec is a VERY good brand. You do pay a premium to have that name on your monitors. I recon that the amount you pay for the brand is more or less the same no matter the total amount - thus: if you buy their smallest monitors (cheapest) then the relative amount (out of the total amount) going to "actual monitor" is the smallest.
