Drum Samplers / Synths

Hello fellow producers,

I'm searching for a nice drum sampler and/or synth, suitable for electronic music production. I'm relatively new to production, but I'd like a nice, solid drum program from which to work in Cubase.

So far in the running are the following programs:

1) DR-008
2) Battery
3) Groove Agent
4) Spectrasonics Stylus RMX

Please list any others you think are great products to consider. I'd much appreciate it!

Thanks!

I understand why you're a bit puzzled over which one to choose.

To be honest, all I'm using for drums programming in Cubase is the HALion sampler. I'm not missing any features and it works for me.

I've always wondered what the benefits would be in using a "real" drum sampler (besides the included sound libraries). Can anyone shed some light on this?

Regards

Hey,

Cool. I often wondered about how good the drum samples are that HALion has. I have the demo here of HALion 3. I'll give it a go.

Anyone else?

Well, to be a little more specific, I only use the HALion as a sampler - and then various sample CDs for the actual samples.

Regards

Oh, OK. I understand that HALion comes with tons of samples, so I just assumed. What are some good companies to purchase drum sample DVD/CDs from?

Thanks

Indeed it comes with samples and it's not that they are bad. Not at all. But since I bought the Vengeance Club CD I haven't used anything else. I might get flamed for saying this (since it has been discussed over and over in this forum), but the Vengeance CDs are definately worth looking into. You probably don't need them all as they tend to sound "alike" (at least that's what I've heard people say).

Regards

Vengeance has lots of good samples, yes. I've found that no library is really a one-stop shop; I've been collecting drum samples from all over the place for a couple of years now and am just barely able to find exactly what I want most of the time.

It is true that any sampler like HALion or Kontakt can function as a drum sampler too. However, full-fledged drum samplers like Battery make it much quicker to set up a kit and also give you basic effects (like filters, compression, LFOs) that you can customize for each "cell", whereas with a regular sampler it's kind of a pain in the butt to do that if you can do it at all.

With Stylus RMX you can't really use your own samples at all, so if your intent is to create percussion from scratch then I wouldn't lump that in the same category as drum synths/samplers (although it's certainly got a great internal library and interface).

Stylus RMX, great for drums.. u can take a loop, and remove whatever parts you dont need for it, and u can re-arrange the loops, add all sorts of FXes.. its really an awesome program.

especially for those who cant stand using a loop with kick and clap in it, those are so useless.

Stylus RMX and Battery do it for me! Both are great programs that I highly recommend. Good luck with your productions.

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I think I will get DR-008 for starters, then Battery 3 when it comes out. Thanks again!

dr-008 is wick! seriously..save ur money and buy battery, if u cant afford 3 then buy 2 of someone thats upgraded to 3 and are selling 2 but without registeration access....ebay...

i use 2 and will upgrade to 3 soon but i can say that i used dr-008 for a wile and found it very basic, battery is soo straight forward and has all the tools u need to create anything on the precussion end of things with ease and its a pleasure to use...
