Smoking ..umm..something REVIEW: NUIT BLANCHE 2006

decent stuff .. definately a sign of Toronto's re-awakening. unfortunately i was only able to check out the installations in Zone A due to time constraints this evening, but it was definately well worth it. they should really consider making some of these permanent fixtures in the city.

pics and vids to come!

I stupidly didn't bring a camera w/me last night, but we hit up some things in Zone A & B. We especially liked the Cuban guy's exhibit at the ROM as well as the live Afro-Cuban band that was playing. The dancers in the back were even more enchanting. Saw the fog exhibit and the wish tree. Then headed to the OCAD area, where we went to that dance in the gym w/all the balls. Earlier, 10 yr old DJ's were spinning, but it was way past their bedtime when we arrived. Whomever was spinning had the skills of a 10 yr old tho (or maybe the 10 yr olds were better?). What was supposed to be like a highschool 'dance' in a gym turned into a full fledged dodge ball game, w/people aggressively pelting the balls at people. Then we headed to the Harrison Baths to catch the gay penguin exhibit. Did anyone catch this? So cute. I so badly wanted to steal one of the balloon penguins floating in the pool. People were able to jump in and swim too, some had no problem baring all in front of a sea of passers-by either. Then checked out the 'disco dancefloor' on Queen St, and by then we were all pooped out.

An EXCELLENT night out, a much-needed breath of fresh air from the regular routine of Sat. night clubbing. I hope this becomes an annual event (more often would be even better).

I had a great time. Although I wish I had gotten more sleep the night before, I would have enjoyed it a lot more.

Toronto needs more events like these!

Those were the 3 main ones we saw as well.

My girlfriends birthday was the same night so soupostar and I cabbed from hamilton to toronto at like 3 in the morning to go see what was left of the exibit.

The balls were my favourite, we went back there at the very end of the night to see it again...we were sitting on some of the couches, and some guy was mangled out of his tree and sat beside us and started throwing up beside the couch but other than that it was really cool.

The Ladies Eating cake in the middle of the midsection on university was pretty interesting as well...

SOOOOOO dope. had so much fun checking this event out, it was so different and will stand out in the year for sure. there were so many cool little spots to find it was almost like a giant 'alice in wonderland' styled treasure hunt. well at least it was a hunt in my state. lol. loved the balls, the fog, the dancefloor, wall art and wall holes. i think i had the oppurtunity to go out w/ the world's best art critic too. which just enlightened the whole experience that much more. lopi = art critic extrodinaire. you were amazing. won't forget this one for a long long time. specially w/ the ball floating around here somewhere.......

gay penguins? i raise you w/ floating sheep
i didn't see this wish tree!?!?!? pics?

Now wasn't that a fun evening of art overload and loveliness!
I had so much fun; we treated it as a girl’s night out on the town about 7 of us ended up traveling around grange park/OCAD area. We started at about 9pm and walked until 3:30are ... I had the best time ever, it certainly beat going to the government to bits!!!!!

Although it was pissing rain, we all brought umbrellas and viewed the city through artistic eyes, which is all the time for me

I love Media Art Installations and that's what was going on around town!
ZONE A!
At first we went to see the projectio0ns on the windows of the Ballet School at Jarvis and Carlton Area. Then we headed to Bloor and Avenue Road, (parked at my work) then went to the church exhibit at, which was a light installation (outside) but people were going in and I think we were in a mass! But it was neat to see the stained glass windows and candles lit. Outside on the Church it was a light that read
"HOLD THAT THOUGHT"
So I tried to "hold that thought" which lasted a minute LOL! Then we went to the ROM saw a exhibit by Carlos Garaicoa, then an amazing animation by Holger Lippemann and Alekos Hofstetter, then a salsa dancing band with dancers called Noche En Havana, then we saw a DVD projection of Sheep - Bahhhahahahaha by Micheal Snow.
Then we walked down Philosphers walk just west of the ROM. While walking down the path, I saw some long piece of paper hanging from a tree, I said to Nat this looks like an installation I once saw in South Korea, it was about people writing down their wishes on pieces of paper and hanging them off a tree. Then if you came back and the paper was not there it was to be said that your wish came true, or was underway! So yeah, we arrive at this light up tree with tones’ of these pieces of paper and sure enough I was right! That was neat - I made a couple wishes and hung them there! Lord knows I need to make wishes for any sort of happiness So the was calledOne night One Garden One Wish
then we headed down the foggy lane - to Fujiko Nakaya's FOG installation, let me say that if you are ever stuffed up - natural mist fog is where it's at! I was so clear headed and could clearly breathe! Ahhhhhh, it felt so nice!
So it took a while to walk through that path and it mildly stopped raining at that point but the mist to create the fog was making up for it . I took some amazing pictures, but I also broke my camera that night! Bugger all! But I just broke the battery incasing, so it should be fine with a bit of sticky tape! Lad –ee-da!

Anyways after Zone A was done we headed to Zone B which was around the OCAD/Grange Park area! There was a lot of fun stuff going on around there!
The two that I really enjoyed there were these
Harrison Baths
Which was at 15 stephanie street in the “bath/swimming” recreation area and it was all about Penquins… by John Greyson & David Wall it was a video installation about Roy & Silo’s Gay divorce…
It was really wack! But that is Why I liked it so much!
The other one I saw was titled
Ballroom Dancing
Which had 10 year old DJ’s spinning music and the entire auditorium was filled with some what soft plastic balls of all colours! I swear I want to party there again
It was at University Settlement House at 23 Grange it was created by Darren O’Donnell, it was called a performance, but it was more like abuse, o nly because I got hit so many damn times in the head!
I left there saying I have had to many balls in my face!
Lol

Well that’s it! Had a gret time and I think they should have this type of art installations all the time in Toronto~!
