99.999 % of matter is empty space. And 99% of the universe is empty space. Multiply those factors and you get a really empty universe ...
Oh, the astronomers have found several planetary systems after surveying the nearest 300 or so stars. I think they found 25 planetary systems like ours - one in about every 10 stars. About 1 in 3-4 stars has planets, mainly gas giants, and 1 in 2 of those stars has similary planetary systems like our system!
So at this estimate our galaxy has a possible 20 billion stars with a planetary system like ours. And lets say 1 in 10 of those has life sustaining capability, thats 2 billion. And 1 in ten of those has some sort of life developed, maybe primitive mainly because the planet is located at the right distance from the star, thats 200 million. And then maybe 1 in 100 of those systems has a more advanced life system, thats 2 million ... surely there are other factors too, but imagine the possibilities ... these creatures are probably not advanced enough to travel great distances.
And the ones that do are probably so intelligent they watch us and try not to interfere with our planet ;-)
