installation of nearfield monitors

hi!

i got me some nearfield monitors for my bedroom studio. as the space on the desk is very limited i want to build some stands with damped plattforms to put them on. i have seen something like that in the shop several times with the monitors laying horizontally. now i read in the manual that you should never do that. does anyone know what the problem could be?

Yes. Phase problems with lower frequencies. So many studios are placing their monitors horizontally without realizing that the sound hurts from this.

Regards

both drivers in your monitor (tweeter and main speaker) are not at the same distance from your ear all the time if you move around even just a little bit. they will cancel each other out in some spots in your listening area.

keep them vertical so that no matter where you are in the room, you are the same distance equally from the main speaker and the tweeter.

laying monitors (built to stand vertically) on their sides will also make it difficult to place sounds "correctly" in the stereo-panorama due to the above mentioned different distances of tweeter and main speaker.

BTW: if you get the "jerker" desk from ikea (got mine for 70,- euro used condition) you can fit some little shelves left and right (from ikea, too) that are perfect for your monitors. put some "auralex" acustic foam pads under them. works perfect for me.
