we had a bit of a drunken/stoned chat last night. my friend and i were talking about time, and how it was relative to where you were in the universe i.e. time on mars would seem a lot faster/slower depending on how fast the planet's orbit around the sun is.

so then what is time?

time is relative, time is constant. but that leaves us no more informed than before i started typing. so let's go waaay back to the beginning of the universe (before time began). where were we? without time, can anything exist? time is the presence of objects in an area, isn't it? we've merely put a label on something we don't understand to help others to accept it.

can someone explain time to me?

heres something else to think about, aperently the unniverse started due to 2 particles coliding and causing the big bang, but ... where did the 2 particles come from????

Get into anything that deals with physics or quantum mechanics(nothing TOO advanced...) just something for the laymen. I read a bit of a book called "Hyperspace" by Michio Kaku, pretty messed up/interesting stuff. He talks about multiple dimensional space (ei not just Einstein's typical 4 dimensional space/time) and how it might be possible to traverse space and time through those higher dimensions we can barely have a glimpse at. Ok granted time IS a man made idea/concept just like mathematics but there must be things that are constant (ei the speed of light according to Einstein...some ppl even believe we can go faster...). Ok enuf of my ramblings...just READ if you can understand what the hell they're talking about. lol

now, if i could digress for a moment. take the theory of relativity. basically it says that if you move faster than the speed of light, you are moving at a faster rate than time itself, and therefore time will slow down. you will actually break the barrier of the spacetime continum, where the bonds of the universe are broken and you sneak right through (conceivably) the fabric of the universe. where do you go??? agggggh.. i hate physics.

yes. there have been tests where they've sped light-molecules up to 99.8% of the speed of light, and finally let it go speeding through a magnetic field to measure it's trajectory. they've found that it starts to move on a ..curve?..but they cannot track the path of the light past the field, and are unable to predict what would happen if it was moving faster than the speed of light.

i believe it was one very very very very very dense atom-like molecule that exploded after too much friction and outward pressure.
but i agree, it is quite disconcerting. there has to be an origin for everything, but that answer is far beyond our human intellectual capacity.

conceivably, the universe is a contract and expanding life form, right now it is in the expanding mode. but perhaps in several trillion years, it will have collapsed on itself, and having crushed itself into a very very very very dense molecule, it will explode again in a few billion years after the many trillion of years that have already passed. creating new stars, new planets, new everything. will everything be the same? will there still be the milky way galaxy?

but where did the particles come from?? and if the universe does crush and disapear into nouthing then why!

all this is to much brain work! wheres the brainy tranceaddicts gone???

Interesting topic, here is what I think:

There is no such thing as the beginning of time. Time is eternal and universal to everything. The concept of "time" can be reduced down to "a nonspatial continuum in which events occur in apparently irreversible succession". Whether it's the slightest twitch of a microscopic hair on a protozoan, to the creation of the universe, it's impossible for there to be no potential of any kind of event to occur.

that explains a bit of it. but what purpose does time serve? it still remains an extremly abstract, but somehow concrete idea. it exists, we know that, but for what purpose?

say for instance, you break through the space-time continuum, the fabric of time comes apart at the seams, and you break through[/i] space, and come out in some completely different sector of space. maybe the same area of space, but 2000 years in the future/past.

what about wormholes? gahd. i wish i knew more.
