Hello! Mastering: Compression, Volume Maximization, Software/Hardware Advice needed!

Hi, I use the Waves RCL compressor to finish off mastering, and I think im not getting the best results possible from it. There is too much audio compromization with it.. so I have a few questions:

1) Are there specific values that you usually go with when compressing your trance tracks? (ie Ratio, Attack Time, Release etc)

2) Do hardware compressors provide better results? Im looking at the Behringer Multicom Pro - MDX4400, Tube Composer, Ultra Dyne Pro, Ultramizer Pro. anyone know what each is specifically good for, and which would be the best for mastering?

thanks for the help
