I wrote a Firefox script in PHP for TA. Basically it frees you from hitting the refresh button but there are a couple of other features.

How it works:
In the background it will automatically request an update from the server based on an interval of time you set. The variable is stored in seconds so if you put 60 in there it will do its update once a minute.

What it looks like:
The colour of a thread will change everytime it gets a new reply since you last read it. Becoming brighter and brighter with each reply. It maxes with a bright blue colour at 20+ replies.

Quote Feature:
If a reply quotes something you wrote then a purple "*" will be superimposed on the thread title to draw your attention to it.

Key Word Feature:
You can associate up to 15 key words with 15 colours. So say you assign the word "Josh4" with "Pink" then anytime the word "Josh4" appears in a thread it will become pink to help draw your attention to it.

There's still a couple of bugs I have to work out (it's already over 800 lines of code) but once I finish it i'll make it available to whoever wants a copy.

My first thought when reading this: RSS

Sounds like someone's re-inventing the wheel... Why auto-refresh every 60 seconds or any interval of time? Subscribing to the forum and using the notifications to alert you of new topics/posts would make more sense than randomly refreshing.

Instead of asking the server for updates, let the server give them to you when they're really there. All of what you proposed isn't hard or new.

Even so, you do think like one. You'd make a great programmer. Try it some time, you might fall in love with it.

Start with Ruby or Python and move up from there.
